Canon EOS SLR system NEWBIE guide.

between 450D n 1000D i might go for 1000D. It's so much cheaper and the amount of pixels ain't tt impt afterall. but if u really wants a better camera, skip XXXD and go for the XXD series.

my 2 cents.

Hi,

I'm a DSLR newbie but is currently considering getting a DSLR. Pardon the layman term of the language used here.

I saw my friend using a

Canon 450D + Sigma AF18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC Optical Stabilizer Lens

I like taking Bokeh (sharp contrast on the subject and blurry backgrounds) photos and this combination can take Bokeh easily. However, it seems to be unable to take those normal all clear photos (sharp contrast on everything), every photo I take seem to be Bokeh.

I also have another friend recommending me to get a 40D instead, saying 450D is not good enough. I understand that the higher the price, the better the camera and photo so I'm just wondering if I need to get to that pro level.

Is the 450D good enough for me to take photos that look more pro than those normal digital camera can take (For e.g. it's more diff for normal camera to take Bokeh but so much easier to use the DSLR!). I know it's the lens that matter but will the 450D be able to support different lens for me to play around?

I'll mostly be taking

Bokeh photos of people.
Scenaries of mountains and sea.
Night photos (I know normal camera tends to take blurry night photos without tripod. Is it the same with DSLR?)
Fireworks.

Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks! =D

do u in the first place understand what metering is about? for as far as i know, spot metering is actually instead of metering the whole scene or a subject, it meters a certain spot the ur focusing point is pointing at.

bros out there, please correct me if i'm wrong. :)

hey, im a noob and im planning in buying the eos 500d as my first dslr. is it truly a good buy? if it is. when can i get the whole kit at the chepaest price?

yes it only meters a small section of the whole scene, but not where u focus, but the centre circle marked out in the focusing screen. for 40D, the circle (for spot metering) is approx. 3.8% in the centre.

(edit) another frustration I've experienced is that somehow, my photos never come out as vivid as I want them to be. Hell, even the photos that I used to take on my p&s Lumix turn up with better colours! Eg. on my 450D, blue skies always turn out more white than they should be, and green grass turns up to look very faded out. Is this a fundamental problem with the 450D, Canon cameras in general, or the kit lens? :\ Help please.

I am a newbie using 1000D, has the same problem too, even the faces of people looks pale. Is there some settings which I should change?

u need a CPL filter.
u may oso consider to attend a basic DSLR course from Knowledge Bowl aka *********.
they taught me how to use a CPL and ND4 filter and lots of other useful stuff.
i am still attending the course, it's a 10 lessons course, once a week with 1 day and 1 nite outing. i paid $270 for it.

Hi all,
I am a newbie here. I am gonna get a Canon 500D. I wanna get a slightly better lens than the kit lens... What should i get? I probably would need an IS one. I am into events so a lens which performs well under low light conditions would be of paramount importance. I was thinking of the EF-S17-55 f/2,8 IS USM one... how much is it?

almost 2 grand... its basically an L lens in an ef-s mount.

maybe consider the efs 17-85 or the new 18-135 and 15-85

Thanks for the useful tips. BTW, any idea how much the Sigma COMPACT HYPERZOOM 28-300mm F/3.5-6.3 ASPHERICAL costs here in SG? Can't seem to find prices online. Thanks.

hi all,

i recently got my 500D, my first dslr in fact and now undergoing some exploration period of the camera. i will be travelling next week and im wondering whether will there be any problems to place the camera through the xray scanner? ive read somewhere that it does affect somehow but that was sometime ago, and i can't find the info. anyone could shed some light on that..

Nope, no problems.

yeah...the 17-55 costs $1550 - $1600 brand new. but its a very very good piece of glass. the photos produce are close to primes. get the 15-85, its almost as sharp and has longer range. the only thing u will lose out is f/2.8 constant. but it's not a big deal if u are basically shooting family, landscape/cityscape, general shooting...17-55 is more for people who have $$ and know wad they really want to shoot. its a specialist lens. like wad rgy1993 said: an L lens in an ef-s mount...but unlike L lens, the built is awful compared to L.

i think tt's a negative. why would x-ray machines affect any cameras? film photographers travels too. no?

Hi,

I'm just bought my 500D last Saturday, I had took a few photo from basic mode & creative mode... the quality picture look not so sharp and clear...

If using Advance mode like P, Av or Tv, what setting need to pay attention to make the photo look clear & sharp & nice color...?

Hope can gain something ... hee thanks
