Nikon Corporation (Michio Kariya, President) is pleased to announce that as of August
2009 total production of NIKKOR lenses, interchangeable lenses for Nikon SLR
cameras, reached fifty million. Total production of NIKKOR lenses reached forty-five
million in August 2008 with production of an additional five million over the past year.

Nikon (then Nippon Kogaku K.K.) released its first NIKKOR lens for Nikon SLR
cameras, the NIKKOR-S Auto 5cm f/2, in 1959 along with its first SLR camera, the
Nikon F. In the fifty years since then, NIKKOR lenses have been extremely well
received by a great number of photo enthusiasts and professional photographers.

The current lineup of more than sixty NIKKOR lenses for Nikon SLR cameras offers a
wide variety of lenses, including fisheye lenses, super wide-angle to super telephoto
lenses and micro lenses.

●The NIKKOR brand
As the brand name for Nikon lenses, NIKKOR has become synonymous with
high-performance, high-quality SLR lenses. The NIKKOR name comes from adding “R”—a
common practice in the naming of photographic lenses at that time—to “Nikko”, the
Romanized abbreviation for Nippon Kogaku K.K. In 1933, the large-format lens for aerial
photography was released with the name Aero-Nikkor, making last year the 75th
anniversary of the NIKKOR brand. "

If I read correctly, it's EF lenses which reached 40M. What about the FD lenses? That's going to exceed Nikon's figure. What about the Nippon Kogaku lenses they used before making their own lenses?

Well, they kinda abandoned the FD users back then. So :dunno:

At least Nikon users can use all those old lenses up till now. :thumbsup:

But the fact that they abandoned the FD lenses and still hitting 40M lenses is impressive. Strong marketing strategy. Most likely people will buy back the EF version of the FD lenses they used to own or switch system completely.

wah... tt's incredible lots... congrts to nikon for that feat, but well, i think out of the 50million, perhaps 1/5 of it are dump in wastelands and buried in landfills... just like old phones and technology chips..

Technically, it is possible to buy an FD to EOS adapter or mod the lens mount to EOS. So in a way, the FD lenses are never truly abandoned

Ofcourse the mileage varies... but it is possible.

On top of that, one can buy a Nikon lens to EOS adapter, so effectively the EOS mount now have at least 50 million Nikkor lenses plus whatever Canon produced. wow!

...albeit not all with AF capability.

It is just my guess anyway, btw does anyone know if all the Nikkor lenses will fit the Nikon to EOS adapters?
