New to DSLR...to get or not to get?

Hi all,
I am in a dilemma now - on whether I should get a Nikon D90 camera during this coming Comex IT Show. I currently own a semipro point and shoot Panasonic Lumix FZ50 camera. I thought of upgrading to a better camera since I have already been using the current one for more than 2 years.

You see, I am not a hard-core photographer but I have been interested in photography for years now and I'd occassionally go out with my friends for a "photoshooting spree". The functions and kit lens provided for D90 has definitely caught my attention but the question is 'do i really need it'?

I feel that no digital camera can ever beat a DSLR in terms of abilities and photo outcomes. However, the only thing that is stopping me in my decision of getting a DSLR is the lenses . The cost of lenses is definitely not cheap (at least for a student like me) . I know that lenses can be shared between common DSLR brand users but sometimes it can get a little inconvenient right?

I must admit that one of the reasons of me wanting to get a DSLR is for my trip to Switzerland in 2010. Switzerland is a beautiful place and I would like to use a good camera to capture my wonderful moments spent there. :lovegrin:

I am in a dilemma and I so want to express myself but I am just FREAKING bad with words. I can only hope that viewers of this post can understand what I am feeling and what I mean.

Hope you guys can give me some suggestions on what you think about this. I NEED SOME HELP and PEOPLE TO PHYSCO ME INTO MAKING A FINAL DECISION!!!

There is no need to psycho you.

It seems you have already decided to get one. The thing now is simply to work out a budget to see your options of bodies and lenses and then go to the stores to try them out.

The FZ50 is a good prosumer camera. It should be able to take good pictures for your trip in Switzerland.

If you want to embark on a system, be prepared to spend and carry the additional weight.

I've seen plenty of beautiful pictures of Switzerland taken with a compact camera. I know deep down inside you want to switch. At the end of the day, the decision is yours.

I agree with you with regards to being able to take nice pictures as well, even with a compact camera.Sometimes it's just so hard to resist temptations.Oh well, guess it all depends on what Comex has to this budgeted little girl :cry:...LOL.

Packages offered during Comex are seldom as attractive as those already existing in the camera shops. Also, the freebies (tripod, camera bags...)through in during Comex are already priced in and are usually not really good quality anyway. Plus there is the crazy crowd to contend with....

Always thought comex's package offers are UNBEATABLE until seeing what you have said.LOL. Hopefully there is a good price offer that just includes a 8GB memory card and Bag and i'll be more than happy...tripod's really redundant cos I have a good sony one. If they give me a free tripod that'll mean taking up more storage space at home(as I already have 2 tripods-the sony one and a lousy olympus one). Troublesome and I hate it.

Have a look at the Nikon Price Guide and check the listed reputable shops. No point running to Comex&Co. If you are cost-conscious then get the basic camera kit, nothing else. Stay away from so-called freebies, cheap add-ons with limited value. Buy those items (tripod, filters, bags etc.) one you know exactly what you need and once you have basic knowledge about models and prices. Otherwise chances are good that you waste money. Especially stay away from all "uncle sales man recommends" stuffs. They want to sell, nothing else. Education and recommendation you better get here in the forum, from Internet or other photographers.

Personally if I am going oversea, I would not hesitate to bring my FZ50 over my 450D. Even owning the dslr, the FZ50 still remain one of my best loved camera. :heart:

If you are on a budget, the d90+18-105kit lens+a 50/1.8 might be a great option at around 1.8k. A 35/1.8 will be great addition too. It is not necessary to get really expensive lens if you are limited by budget.

A dslr is not just for people who go for frequent shooting trips and outing. You can bring it along daily rountine too. Just snap on kit lens or a light prime, wrap in t-shirt and dump in whatever bag you are carrying that day.

thats what i'm doing now. But over time, that shirt + cam will be a bit too much on days where you have to bring more books (student here) to school, esp when you're using a sling. thus i'm looking at crumpler sinking barge.

Nonetheless, i used to never take photos. Now i bring my cam everywhere cause i now see opportunities everywhere.

Which shop would you recommend to me with regards to getting the camera? Used to buy 2 of my old cameras from Alan Photo @ Sim Lim. Thought their services and stuff are of a so-so standard to me and I feel a little intimidated everytime i go there:dunno: .
