The race of a lifetime at Singapore Changi Airport.

Changi GP Festival to showcase not-to-be-missed race between Porsche and Boeing 747 Singapore Changi Airport is revving up for the Changi GP Festival in September.

Airport visitors can look forward to a month of race-related activities starting with the Changi Airport Race – the first-ever jetliner versus car race in Asia. The race on 5 September 2009 will pitch a Porsche Carrera Cup race car against a Boeing 747 aircraft from Singapore carrier, Jett8 Airlines, to determine the speed king of the tarmac.

Two hundred grandstand tickets are up for grabs for fans who wish to hear and experience the race up close on the tarmac of Changi Airport. Members of the public who spend a minimum of $30 in a single receipt in the public areas of Terminals 1, 2 or 3 from 15 August to 23 August 2009 will qualify for a lucky draw to win a pair of tickets. Besides the grandstand tickets, another 500 tickets will be available for an exclusive live screening of the race at the public area of Terminal 3. Ticket holders will also be invited to enjoy the festivities at the airport on the race day.

Chief Executive Officer of Changi Airport Group, Mr Lee Seow Hiang said, “Changi Airport Group is proud to host this race of a lifetime, the first-ever between a jetliner and a car in Asia. There will be lots of buzz and excitement at Changi Airport with the Changi GP Festival. We invite everyone to join us as we celebrate the Singapore GP season.”

The Porsche car taking part in the race will be on display at Terminal 3’s Departure Hall for a week from 19 August to 26 August. On race day, Porsche will launch its new Porsche 911 GT3 at Changi Airport.

There will be 200 grandstand tickets, 50 pairs of tickets will be given through a lucky draw to the public, qualify for the lucky draw by spending at least S$30 in a single receipt on shopping or dining at the Changi Airport public areas from 15 – 23 August 2009. The other 50 pairs will probably be given to invited guests and VIPs only.

dun waste time the 747 jumbo jet is so much slower and it is and old aircraft we talking about a 200 tone plane why not race with some fighter plane, i can tell you the result the car will win,nothing special dun waste your time and money , i rather go for a good meal

Yup, just some simple calculations to support the fact.

Just to show how quick a B747 is able to reach Vr with a minimal takeoff mass.

The exact take-off weight (which BTW is absolutely not known to me) has to be known before the V1/Vr/V2 speed can be calculated.

Anyway I'll hazard a guess with reference to the charts available to me based on a 200,000 kg total take-off weight and under the following operational conditions...

• Altitude region A,
• Flaps 20 with maximum rated thrust,
• Dry and straight runway with wind factor not taken into account.

V1: 90 KIAS
Vr: 105 KIAS (note: see below)
V2: 130 KIAS

As the 105 KIAS rotation speed is below the Vmcg (Minimum Controllable Ground Speed), 122 KIAS in such a situation, the Vmcg figure has to be used in lieu of the calculated Vr figure instead. Therefore the aircraft is only rotated at 122 KIAS and the takeoff roll should not take more than 800 meters (guesstimate).

* KIAS --> (Knots, Indicated Air Speed)

225.90 km/hr rotation speed in a 800 meters takeoff roll and a duration of approximately 6 to 8 seconds and this is for a B744, Jett8 B747-281F/SCD (9V-JEB "Shogun") might just take little longer with its older GE CF6-50E2 engines.
