Dust on sensors or lens? Pics shown

Hi fellow clubsnapper,

I juz bought a new lens 17-55mm f2.8. I paid $1500. Noticed plenty of dust on the lens upon paying my money. Only manage to see the dust in the car as it is a brighter place. Called seller 20 minutes later but seller refuses to refund. Seller hanged up my phone.

Lens was rated 10/10 on CS buy and sell. Optic was advertised as excellent. ;(

2 pictures are shown here, both showing a similar white piece of paper.

Just wondering base on u guys experience is the dust on the lens. Have I been cheated, getting a suboptimal which has been rated as 10/10?? :cry: I paid $1500.

Also the same dark spot can even be seen at f11 on my new 17-55mm.

1) Lens 17-55mm, at 18mm f22, ISO 250

2) Lens 18-200mm, at 18mm f22, ISO 250

Yes, looks like dust spots to me.
However, it should not be too costly to get it cleaned in CSC if you cant get blow if off yourself.

And shame on the seller.

Dust in lenses is inevitable. Just get it clean will do. Look for bro Fatigue to get it clean for you at a small cost.

You shot with two lenses to show one is clean (18-200) whereas the other (17-55) has something right ? Is the dust patch very big ? Usually specks won't show up on the photos.

I guess he wants to show that the dust is on the lens and not on his cam's sensor.

Too late to complain anyway. Money exchanged hands. All you can do now is:

1. Write a complain thread, beware of dishonest seller.
2. Send your lens to Nikon or Canon SC (depending on what brand your lens is) and get a cleaning service done. Or get bro Fatigue.

I looked into my old Ais 50mm/1.2mm today also, when I was fixing the aperture ring. There are quite a bit of dust specks in the lens but the dust speckd do not show in the pictures.

Should have checked the lens properly bro.

u might also want to use a blower to blow the interiors of your cam body especially the focus mirror? but rem to put your camera 45 degrees downwards when you blow.

Dust is not a malfunction of the lens and you should have checked the lens properly. People testing / checking optical equipment in dim light call for trouble. Rule of thumb: the further away from the sensor the less any particle will show up in the image. Clean your sensor (or let it be cleaned in Service Center) before you jump into any action with the lens.

How will this affect the image taken by sensor when the mirror is flipped up? Beside this, the focusing mirror is facing downwards, it's located behind the main mirror.

hi, let's not add salt to his wounds. We all learn from some stages...

Anyway, talkingtrash, I suggest you send your pictures to Nikon/Canon service center via email first to verify the spots and ask for ways to remove them yourself if possible. Otherwise, just send lens/camera for cleaning.

I suggest you also name the seller so as to warn others in future dealings.

If we look very closely, black dots caused by dust particles on the sensor seem to exist over some areas. There are about 1mm across on my screen and appear on identical locations in the two photos. I am still pretty fresh from seeing black specks on my photos, shooting on white ceiling with f22 and flash, plus cleaning my sensor with that magnifying glass illuminated with led light gadget...so my guess is these are dust. But I have no clue as to what caused that 3 and 1 larger patches on the 1st and 2nd photo respectively :dunno:

A few question:

What camera you are using ? does it as auto sensor clean when power on and off? did you power on/off when you switch the 2 lenses to take the pic?

Can you verify your test again with the 2 lenses and see if the result is the same.

I am asking because usually dust in lens are normal be it new or old.

1. Unless the dust are big pieces covering the entire lens or at the rear elements or actually fungus. They do not show up in images.

2. The 2nd image shows spot that looks like "sensor dust spot" whereas that spot could not be see on place the first image. The spots in the 1st image also look like sensor dust spot. Hence the test result looks abit not consistent (not your fault). Can it be dust spots in your sensor and that the auto sensor cleaning was activated on switching of lenses.

To see if my theory is true try the test again and if the result is consistent as in the 1st image . Then the lens has plenty of big dust probably at the rear.

I am using a D90. The lens mentioned here is 17-55mm f2.8, a nikon.

Yes the dust is reasonably big n can be seen with naked eye when u flick the lever at the lens mount area. I only knew this 'flicking trick' after reading GeraldKhoo's guide on buying 2nd hand lens yesterday.

But test repeated - same findings, dust at different spots. I believe there is some dust on the second lens (18-200m) as well, though lesser than the more expensive 17-55mm.

Nikon Service centre quoted $150-220 for general lens cleaning over the phone. I guess I have to try brother fatigue - but he is a busy man.

Regarding the seller, I think he is a professional camera and lens seller with posts more than 700 +, mostly in the buy and sell section.

Very simple, post a new thread on him. And wait for his response. Either he respond or you warn others against him here. That is as much as you can do and should do.
