Newbie Question

Hi,

I'm planning to buy my first dslr. Decided to get a Canon 500D Kit1 and I also want to get an extra lense. I'm choosing between 18-250mm or 50mm 1.8II. Which one should I get first for a newbie like me? And I also want to know kind of filter I should get first.

If you have the budget to get extra lens, why not start with only 500D body, pluas a Tamron 17-50 f2.8 and EFS 55-250, good enough for you to start. Search around the forum for the performance of each lens

However, if you are not sure will you stay long in this hobby / dslr (since dslr is heavier / more troublesome (need change lens, etc...)) better just get the kit 1 and play 1st. no need get extra lens.

The most basic filter you'll need is the UV or skylight filter, which basically acts as a protection to the front element of your lens against scratches, dirts, fingerprints, knocks, etc. Other then that, other filters like CPL (circular polarizer), ND (neutral density), etc can come later when you're more into the hobby.

If you are planning to get 500D with kit 1, why would you want 18-250mm? Wouldn't it overlap your kit lens?

if u want the 18-250mm (3rd party?) u don't need the Kit lens (18-55) well unless of course u want a back up lens which is lighter for certain occasions.

i think end of the day really depends on ur budget... i speak for myself, i would start off with a body and a versatile 18-200mm, shoot around first and get a prime lens next.

there is no 18-250,

you may have mistaken it for the 18-200.

as ziploc has said, the basic filter you can get first is the UV filter.

the 50mm f/1.8 II prime may be good for you,

due to it's low price, and it's ability to perform.

it will be a good companion in low-light situations.

Sorry. It's not 18-250. It's 55-250. So i just buy those basic filter first.

oh than it makes sense lah...

one is zoom, one is fixed focal length prime... u have to start shooting more than decide for urself what kind of shots u like to shoot more... hah i'm also asking myself the same qn as i ponder on my DSLR set up to get...

basic filter to get as mentioned is the UV or protector filter...

others i find really useful to start

1) CPL
2) ND filters
