I'm planning to get an SB600 speedlight, Im using D70s, (1) is this flash suitable for my cam? (2)are there any 3rd party flash that works well with D70s?
I've got a shaky hands so maybe with flash i can minimize blurred images

Yes SB600 is supported by your D70s, see p. 187 of your D70s manual.

Even with flash, you may still get blurry pics. Practise proper breathing and hand-holding techniques.

Regarding 3rd party flash, you'll need to be careful here. A lot of 3rd party flashes are not entirely compatible to iTTL, or even TTL, on the Nikon, even though they claim so. In my opinion, it is better to pay a little bit more and get the Nikon flash, since you'll get full compatibility with Nikon CLS (Creative Lighting System). For example, you can use the D70S built-in flash's commander mode for wireless TTL off-camera flashes with the SB600. But if budget is really an issue, you can consider getting Metz series of flash (e.g. Metz 48 AF-1).

You can download the Nikon SB600 manual here.

Do you mean that just using the built in flash commander will do or do we need other equipment like another flash SB-900 or SU-800 to mount on the body.
Beacuse 1 of the salesman in MS told me that i need a SU-800 to do off camera flash with the SB-600.

thanks for the advice, i really appreciate it:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:. SB-600 is my prefered flash, im just trying to have some advise to make sure. I read in nikonsg website that it is priced at SGD469, i guess i'd settle with the SB-600 come COMEX'09 on sept. thanks guys for the advise.

When in commander mode the built-in flash of the D70S (or CLS compatible cameras) will act as the master and the SB600 the remote slave. The built-in flash sends data and triggers the SB600 through preflashes, you do not need the SU-800. That's actually one of the main advantages of CLS.

Do bear in mind though that the SB600 can only be a remote slave and cannot be a master.

 thats why the d70/70s/80 are still worth the money because it is CLS capable

if you get the d40/40x/60/5000 and 3000 you need the su-800

i agree, and the D70s,D80,D90 are also better cameras (in terms of features) and saves upgrading, and can also use AF-D lenses.

The new Nissin Di866 is reported to be totally CLS compatible. And it is selling at $400. It can be both Master and Slave. I am still on the fence on getting one, since I use the 40x, if it really works I can do CLS on this one. I already have a SB600 btw. I think the 600 is really value for money. A great flash.

I have SB-600 but am currently thinking of upgrading to SB-900 due to the fact that SB-600 cannot be the master. It's pretty important isn't it?

It depends on whether you are intending to have more than one flash?
If you upgrade and keep the SB-600 then you can start playing both flashes.

depends on people.

some find having the master option important. I've grown with it and only started using commander mode when i had my d90(my old d70 flash was spoilt) . pretty good to have the commander mode

yep i would keep the sb-600 as slave flash. having both 900 and 600 would be great

Yeah, I'll prolly still keep the 600 but I'm guessing it's good to buy the 900.
I've had many cases where it's kinda irritating to be a need to flash off my internal
flash (which I don't need) to get the 600 to flash..

So my D90 with CLS can do it without the SU-800 right.
But I am still a little confuse on the master & slave part. I tot all off camera remote flash are slave, master is the one fixed onto the body right?

Thanks for your patient in answer newbie Question.

Master refers to the flash that commands and triggers other flashes, it does not necessary need to be mounted on the camera (e.g. it can be a remote master, connected to the hotshoe via a cord). D90 is CLS compatible, so you can use the built-in flash as a commander to wirelessly control other remote flashes, without any accessories. And unlike other higher end speedlight like the SB800/900, the SB600 cannot be used as a master flash even if it is mounted onto the hotshoe.

If you're still in doubt, why not go down to the shop with your D90 and give it a try with the SB600 yourself?

Thanks Mod.
Now having a much more clearer picture of master & slave...:)

i'm learning a lot about flash from you guys, from master to slave, i think im getting the idea now. just wanna ask "are the price on comex/IT show really a bargain? or it only seems like it coz of the freebies?"
