Hi everyone...

Recently just got a new cam to start off my new hobby and im just loving it. Bought a canon 500d kit1, not sure whether is it good for a fresh starter. so far i've been learning on my own with a little help from my friends. Dont really have the money to attend courses.. have been reading and exploring all on my own..

Here have alot of pro's semi pro photographers..hope u guys/gals can advise/suggest on my photos...don't wish to be a pro or expat which i think i got a long way for that..hahha...atleast to earn a decent living with my skills as a free lancer...

Hmmmmm, I'm confused...
So you do want to earn some money from this hobby of yours, which would technically make you a professional in this field, whether you like the term or not.

Good that you're learning on your own. Not necessary to attend courses at the beginning, especially if you have a technical and inquisitive mind.

"long way to go" is the correct phrase ;) But you're well on your way I guess. Your photos are quite good.

hi zerocoolastra....hahah ok what i meant was i think i cant be like Mr Willy Foo or like Mr Rory Daniel or like Mr Kenneth Choo..hahahah with all their huge mega camera lenses and stuff...wish i can be like them though... anyway thanks for your advice! :) hope i can make it in this field...kekkee...

In what aspect of photography do you wish to become a freelancer and earn some $$?

My first guess would be wedding photography, am I right?
If it's weddings you want to specialize in, I would advise practising more in that field. Taking landscapes won't give you the direct experience necessary, except giving you more time to familiarize yourself with your camera.

You don't need mega lenses to cover events like weddings.
For a 500D, a 20+mm prime and a 50mm prime would probably be sufficient.
If you've figured out your style, you'll know whether or not the lenses I suggested are relevant or not.

LeslieMM, way to go! Great pictures!

Please do not sell yourself short. They are great photographers but they started somewhere too. In the end it is all hard work, dedication and perserverance. They had their tough times too, and they pushed through and now they are well known and recognized. Equipment is important, but the so called 'MEGA' cameras will come as you gain more experience, make more money and upgrade along the way. It takes time dude and you are well on your way.

As for many others, including myself, we are happy just to be hobbyists, and at the most, serious enthusiasts.

Good luck and keep on shooting and sharing!

No problem dude. Anytime!

Say, if you are interested in wedding photography, I think it may make sense to join one or 2 of those model photoshoots, esp the wedding theme ones. Just to train to catch portraits or candids really quick. I am also thinking of doing one of these sessions myself, although I am more of a landscape shooter.

actually I don't think the model-themed shoots are relevant though. The only thing in common is the outfit... :)
The main difficulty in wedding photography is the hectic flow of events. This doesn't surface during a controlled shoot.

Ya, I agree flow is different. But we can 'rush' ourselves, and move around while others shoot, while we try to catch different angles. Sort of forcing ourselves to adapt. But it does help I think for pre wedding or posed shoots.

Yup... agreed.

Another point I just thought of:
Nowadays when I look at couples' wedding albums, a lot of them are getting more experimental with different light sources, to create certain moods.
This is also hard to re-create during a wedding-themed model photoshoot, mainly due to the timing of the shoots.
If you notice, most wedding albums are shot during the evening golden hour. Most model photoshoots are held on weekend mornings.

Good work on ur EOS 500D :D

A great start for a beginner. quite nice pictures captured.

Canon does provide 1 complimentary class for all new buyers of canon camera. However, i think it covers functionality of the camera more than photography. Quickly sign-up.

Canon also does conduct photography paid-class. Get more info from Canon SG website. Cheers
