Hi all club-mates,

I have decided to give both Nature (ie: birds, animals, etc) and Landscape photography a try after much consideration and interests..

I would like to seek recommendation of a decent telephoto and wide angle len for a starter like me.

I am using a Nikon D80, SB600. Budget of each len to be at max S$600 each. I have come to a point that my kit len 18-135mm doesn't satisfy my interest in both nature and landscape.

Also I don't mind other makes of lens beside Nikon as long as it give a decent result that doesn't discourage a starter in these 2 field of photography. I would likely be leaning towards day photography but once a while by night, as such low-light lens (ie: F2.8) are good to have but not necessary due to my tight budget.

So mates... please give me some suggestions for my consideration and reviewing.

Thanks in advance.

I would recommend the following for your consideration, but they are slightly above your budget of $600 each...

Telephoto - Nikon 70-300 VR
Wide angle - Tokina 11-16 f/2.8

Hi

The 70-300VR is a good lens. A bit over your budget, but see if you can pick up a good deal in the Buy & Sell section. You might just get lucky.

The Tokina 12-24 is also good, and under your price too. Another alternative is the Sigma 10-20.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys!

I will go read up about the wide-angle as recommended.

As for the tele, the Nikon 70-300mm VR is a little over my budget any other recommendation or even other makes?

Any other recommendation for both the lens?

Actually, if the 70-300 is $650, and the Tokina is $550, then you even out- its an average of $600 per lens.

You could consider substitutes- like the 50-200 VR. I think its a lot cheaper- $300+? For wide angle, no other cheaper choice other than the Tokina 12-24 or Sigma 10-20.

But if you interested in birds, then the 70-300 VR gives you the reach. There is a 70-300 that's really cheap, but without VR, you will get fuzzy pictures. Unless you get a tripod. Then its additional cost.

Difficult decision, hor?

If it's over... then you'd better save up. This is one of the few which would give you better image quality at the price. The rest are really MUCH MUCH more expensive.

Hi Jeremy,
Oh you mean $650 for a new Nikon 70-300 VR? not second hand? If really this price than its not a difficult decision to make. I thought I saw at a thread it was selling at much more than that price range. OK I go check out the price at the stores.

Any idea what is the estimate new price for:

Tokina 12-24
Sigma 10-20
Tokina 11-16

The guesstimate is for 2nd hand in BS. With your budget, dun think u can get new for any of the mentioned lens. :)

Do consider the Sigma 120-300mm as well

Do consider the Sigma 120-300mm as well

That's way over his budget.

Nikon 70-300mm vr and Sigma 10-20mm f4.5-5.6 are good choices.

Wow this is cool.
Benefits to me, as I am same as TS, interested in nature and landscape.
TS, probably you will want to go punggol or such places and shoot.
Please do jio me when we got our lens yea!

sh.t, I got no money to buy either tokina or sigma one. ):
But TS, are you gonna sell away your kit lens?

For wide, I'm not so sure.
But for tele, I've seen quite a few or my friends using the 18-200mm lens (DX format lens).

18-200mm for an all rounded?? :dunno:

Sorry, not too sure with the Nikon system so just saying what I observe. :embrass:

Sorry mate. These are second hand prices.

I think new should be about $850 for the 70-300VR, and $900 for the 10-20 Sigma.

Tha would clearly exceed your budget.

But seriously, you can find good deals on the Buy & Sell section of the forum. Especially since lots of Nikon shooters appear to be going full frame, and are junking their lenses.

In the end, its up to you if you feel comfortable buying second hand. I have friends who insist on brand new- they cant stand the idea of used goods. So you got to make that choice. At most wait a bit longer, if necessary.

Anyway, best wishes in your decision.

Best you rent and try out the lenses such as the 70-300VR and sigma 10-20 before committing to a purchase so u know if you're fine with these lenses firsthand.

Tokina 11-16, new is around $940-950

All the lenses I own right now are bought 2nd hand. As long as you check them properly, buying 2nd hand is a good way to go to save money. ;)

Agreed, buying second hand saved me 200-300 per lens.
