I had just being given a Nikon DSLR D5000 as a gift. I would like to hear the review of this model? Is it good enough for a freelance photographer to take wedding shoots (ROM,Pre Wedding & Actual Day)?

Is it difficult to become a photographer for ROM, Pre Wedding and Actual Day Wedding for a totally noobie like me? I wanted to become one but i am not sure how to start to be one.

u probably need a better body.
but i think the d5000 would b a good back-up, or fit it with a 35mm f/1.8 for close-up

ask ur friends to give u a chance to practise.
at FOC, i think they should b agreeable...

It's a long and winding road....
Lots of hardwork more than anything. So yes, I would say it is difficult.

I am newbie like you and I have been a newbie for a long time. And never did I think I will make it as a professional photog. It is not an easy life being a photog. And skillsets of a successful photog extend beyond just technical skills. Marketing, business and people skills also come a lot into play.

Go shoot some AD weddings for a friend or a relative as a 2nd/3rd photographer, and build up experience and portfolio from there first.

What camera can take quality wedding photos without fail? I don't know. But everyone will buy it if such a camera is launched.

I think catchlights is only trying to tell you in an indirect way that the key is in the person behind the camera.

And I remember this one dude in Magnum photos using an old Canon prosumer shooting award winning photos.

Equipment can only do so much. Personally I think for weddings, lenses matter a lot too, why focus on the body oni? And you will eventually spend a lot more in lenses than your camera body.

I open my eye big big and tell you, Nikon D5000 is good enough to take wedding photos.

marketing ,business and people skills should not be a problem for me as i already doing online n offline biz too and used to be a marketing manager. So for this part i am not worried. I am more worry on the skillset part etc. I would love to be a wedding photographer, love to capture the happy moments of a couple and would like to take the most beauty shot for them to remember at.

Do you really need 10FPS?

Do you mean to say that professional photographers should all buy 1Ds3, D3x and A900 then to take wedding photos? You have to understand that pros make their living off photography, and thus buy only what deem to be cost-justifiable. You will not cheat your customers if you use entry level equipment but to the best of what they can give you. You will be cheating your customers if you show them a top-of-the-range camera but peform at a sub-standard level because of the assumption that the pro camera's capabilities will make up for the half-hearted performance.

Since your reply already state your view that entry-level camera will not do justice for people who pay you for shoots, then you've probably answer your own question. Just get the best pro camera on the market lah.

A D5000 is more than good enough to take good wedding photographs. You need to pair it with good lenses capable of low light photography.

Even an entry level DSLR like D40 is capable of very good results in the right hands. Using one in a wedding shoot is NOT cheating your customer. The important thing is the result. If the result picture is good, who cares what camera you uses?

Even a pro like Ken Rockwell uses a D40 for paid shoots. He also uses his D300 and D3. but then, he is still using his D40. And there is this article about him using a D5000 nowadays.

1) Are you saying all Freelance PG must have a pro level camera for any paid job? Simple- Go to CS gallery and see for yourself, is it the camera or PG.

2) Short changing/cheating? The client view the portfolio and accept the service, not the engagement of camera system. Thats why I suggest you read into his reply. Whats the point putting a pro equipment list and doesnt deliver whats in the portfolio.

Totally agree with you on best quality - image variety, composition, technique, pre/post deliveries.

This is what you assumed... I dun think catchlight mention anything that should make you feel so worked up or offended.. your attitude/reply is :nono:.. back to your concern.. I think you should start learning the basics then think about if your equipment is sufficient for your needs..

To answer TS qn, if I understand it, he knows that its the person not the camera that makes a gd shot.

And I do 100% agree with e above assessment abt lower rangecam, D5000 etc.
BUT, as DSLR becomes more and more common and potential clients become more knowledgeable, I do think maybe there will be many clients who will want to be shot by 'higher' end cam. Misguided probably but still...

As such, whats the camera does come into consideration. Ken Rockwell can use a D40 cause he IS already Ken Rockwell, may not be same story for others.

But of course if you already have a reputation then its different. I'm just saying it will be EASIER?

to answer your question:

1) yes, d5000 is good enough, skill-set more important than camera body when it comes to capturing good wedding photos, of course with better equipment you can do MORE THINGS, doesn't mean you cannot do anything

2) depends. not everyone can be a good photographer, contrary to popular belief. but we can all become superb photographers in our own minds. that said, you can improve, that's for sure.
