You would remember:
  • You grew up watching G.I. Joe, He-Man, M.A.S.K., Ninja Turtles, Silverhawks, ThunderCats, Transformers, Robocop / Carebears, Mickey Mouse, My Little Pony and Smurfs.

  • You grew up brushing your teeth with a mug in primary school during recess time. You would squat by a drain with all your classmates beside you, and brush your teeth with a coloured mug.

  • You hated or loved the school nurse (she was either pretty or mean).

  • You know what SBC stands for.

  • You paid 40 cents for cartons of chocolate or strawberry milk every week in class.

  • Everyone's wallet used to be the velcro type

  • SBS buses used to be non air-conditioned. The bus seats are made of wood and the cushion were red. The big red bell gave a loud BEEP! when pressed.

  • There were still bus tickets and bus conductors would come up to check them.

  • Envelopes were given to us to donate to Charity Elephant every Children's Day.

  • You've probably read Young Generation magazine. You know who's Vinny the little vampire and Acai the constable.

  • You know what PETS are and the hidden animals in all the text pages. You hated penmanship.

  • Writing lines and caning hands were common, esp if you failed chinese spelling (caning was actually allowed. no sh1t).

  • You were there when they first introduced the MRT here. You went for the first ride with your parents and you would kneel on the seat to see the scenery.

  • Movie tickets used to cost only $3.50.

  • Gals were fascinated by Strawberry Short Cake and Barbie Dolls.

  • You learn to laugh like The Count in Sesame Street.

  • You bought tidbits called beebee (20 cents per pack, 10 cents in MGS), and mamee (30 cents), that had a different sticker in it every time.

  • You carried a lunch box to school but either threw away the food or brought it back home again.

  • You watched TV2 (also known as Channel 10) cartoons because Channel 5 never had enough cartoons for you.

  • Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, The Three Investigators, Famous Five and Secret Seven were probably the thickest story books you thought you would ever read.

  • KFC used to be a high class restaurant that served food in plates and had metal forks and knives.

  • The most vulgar thing you said was a55hole and idiot and THE MOST EXTREME WAS 'chicken pie'...you just couldn't bring yourself to say the hokkien translation.

  • Catching and pepsi-cola was the IN thing, and twist was the magic word.

  • Your English workbooks were made of some damn poor quality paper that was smooth and yellow.

  • You came to school 15 mins before the bell every morning just so you could copy someone's homework.

  • CDIS was your best friend.

  • The only computer lessons in school involved funny pixellized characters in 16 colours walking about trying to teach you math.

  • Waterbottles were slung around your neck and a must everywhere you went.

  • Boys loved to play soccer with small stones or tennis balls in the basketball court.

  • Girls played five stones and boys played with marbles.

  • Science was fun with the Balsam and the Angsana being the most important plants of our lives, guppies and swordtail being the most important fishes.

  • Who can forget Ahmad, Bala, Sumei and John, immortalized in our minds from school textbooks.

  • We conducted experiments of our own to get badges for being a Young Zoologist/Botanist etc.

  • Every Children's day and National day you either got pins or pens with 'Happy Children's Day 1993' or useless plastic files with 'Happy National Day 1994'.

  • You wore BM2000, BATA, or Pallas shoes.

  • Your form teacher taught you Maths, Science and English.

  • You went to school in slippers and a raincoat when it rained, and you find a dry spot in the school to sit down, dry your feet, and wear your dry and warm socks and shoes.

  • There would be spelling tests and mental sums to do almost everyday (you hated them).

  • Your friends considered you lucky and rich if your parents gave you $2 or more for pocket mone everyday.

  • You saw Wee Kim Wee's face in the school hall.

  • Boys liked catching fighting spiders, earthworms or tadpoles.

  • Collecting and battling erasers was a pastime for boys.

  • Class monitors and prefects loved to say, "You talk somemore, I write your name ah!"

  • You got booked for muddy shoes in class.

  • There were at least 40 people in one class.

  • You brought every single book to school, even though there was a timetable.

YEAH!!!! I distinctively remember all those...

can even describe in detail!

SBS buses previously were non airconditioned.....Gearbox was like a super long bent pole. The bus conductor would come and collect and stick some coins in his ears......with his panel of bus tickets...., and the so called "door bell" was an irritating BUZZ..... the windows of the bus had to be "unhinged" and drew sideways from the fella sitting infront, and there would always be this 2 irritating horizontal metal poles that would kinda "frame" your view when u look out of the window. and there were OMO buses...which i dunno know what they stood for.

Besides the squatting by the drain to brush teeth (mandatory) with that plastic mug of water, once a month we'd be given this super red Colgate or whatever brand tablet that will make our whole mouth red! and i remember we tried to "blow" the bubble to whatever size we could b4 spitting into the drain...and the whole drain was a messy red.....

we'd have banana, chocolate or strawberry packet milk that were "ordered" ..... and they tasted horribly artificial now..but back then it was good! i'd usually kapok 2 packets when my classmate doesn't want... :D drank both chocolate and banana together...using 2 packets, 2 straws.... to get chocolate banana..... which always resulted in me going to the toilet though..

as i rose thru primary school using the striped Green and black or "purple/pink" CDIS textbooks with Gopal and Sumei as our subject names, Mr Yaki, Mr Wollie and Miss Lala too (i always suspected Mr Wollie and Miss Lala were up to something)......I also had lunches whereby i could buy a stick of fishball or some quail eggs for a few cents and then dipping into this metal 555 mug with hot soup to "HEAT UP" our food..and this was communal...with other friends dipping their kinda half eaten stick in too............

I remember distinctively buying Fanta Orange or F&N Sarsi in those glass bottles with the metal caps....and we'd keep the caps to "flip" over your friend's bottle caps...so that we could then keep theirs. Sometimes the rubber seal beneath the bottle caps allowed us to get some toys by colelcting 3 or more of the same....... We'd somehow have our own "KING" caps to win our friend's too..... and this applies to the Erasers..... esp the erasers with countries or Alphabets with the clear green top part.....

I remembered that when we had enuf pocket money from our parents or saved enough of that, we could buy Vitagen/Yakult and it usually came with toys too...like the styrofoam cutout planes that had a plastic propellor and they were coloured and had shapes of some WW2 fighter planes/bombers.....those were real fun!

I WISHED I WAS A PHOTOGRAPHER WHEN I WAS IN PRIMARY SCHOOL though.......missed all those good old days.....where friendship and trust were the bonds and lessons that shaped us into what we are today

Although I'm born in the 90's, these are all very very very fond to me as well :D!

About 50-75% of the points are valid for someone me born in the 90's.

I kept losing the eraser battles, I still remember my favourite was Morroco or something, the flag has many stars on it.

Erm ... kids are still playing eraser battles; at least that's what my boys are playing ...

Not sure if you all remember those small little transparent colour plastics of animals call "gu-ti gu-ti" where kids played like eraser battles.

Not forgetting school buses coming to fetch kids from school and back home every day.

The sight of the dental bus/vehicle is a nightmare, then you will be mentally prepared that a kid from other classes will come and pass your teacher a card/slip and someone will be going to the dentist.

I wonder if anyone collected the primary school textbooks from this era ('80s and early '90s), will really love to be able to view them again so as to refresh my ageing memory.

I vividly remember lining up according to height and holding hands with the girls before proceeding to the AVA or multimedia room where we had to watch this horrible VHS mandarin program screened through a gargantuan video projector (which our teacher love to boost and claimed that it is among the first of its kind in schools around Singapore). Of course we love this session back then as it is among one of the few locations around the school equipped with air-conditioning. Now you see video projector in every classroom and some are even air-conditioned for the comfort of the students.

Also, I was smacked with a flying blackboard duster that was threw by the teacher while secretly reading a book which I believed was "smarty and friends" or perhaps some other book that I can't remember. :bsmilie:

Also the Pilot liquid ink needle-point pens used to cost S$5 - S$7, which was a huge sum of money back then, and I love buying and collecting this "plastic book" with a background that allows you to paste and remove stickers on it. It's not uncommon for some of us to exchange the stickers for those from another series.

Post edited: Was meant to mention this instead. :embrass:

OMO stands for "One Man Operation", the time where conductors gave way to ticketing machines. Old buses used to be Two Man Operations.

OMO stands for "One Man Operation", the time where conductors gave way to ticketing machines. Old buses used to be Two Man Operations.
IIRC before the transitlink farecard was introduced, the bus driver's ticketing console was actually covered up and all he had to do was to push a yellow button at the front to issue the tickets.

ho ho ho !!! :thumbsup::thumbsup:

them plastic files were really useless :bsmilie:

Well THIS I have to take part :bsmilie:

[*]You hated or loved the school nurse (she was either pretty or mean).
Every class will have a P.A system and they will call out your names for dental visit even if the lesson is still going on. And if you come back to class with a sore looking face afterwards, your classmates will make fun of you.

[*]Everyone's wallet used to be the velcro type
Mask and Knight Rider velcro wallets will make you the most popular kid in school *brack*

[*]You've probably read Young Generation magazine. You know who's Vinny the little vampire and Acai the constable.
The penpal section was the rage!

[*]Writing lines and caning hands were common, esp if you failed chinese spelling (caning was actually allowed. no sh1t).
Canning was very common in sch during that time and if you're stupid enough to complain to your mum, you'll get another round of canning. That's the respect and trust parents gave teachers during that era

[*]You were there when they first introduced the MRT here. You went for the first ride with your parents and you would kneel on the seat to see the scenery.
IIRC, the first station that opened is Clementi, I went to take a ride with my family, happy.

[*]You learn to laugh like The Count in Sesame Street.
You learn to count like him too :bsmilie:

[*]You bought tidbits called beebee (20 cents per pack, 10 cents in MGS), and mamee (30 cents), that had a different sticker in it every time.
There's a plastic toy inside every beebee, I remember one is the plastic spinning top.

[*]Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, The Three Investigators, Famous Five and Secret Seven were probably the thickest story books you thought you would ever read.
Enid Blyon is the JK Rowling during that time.

[*]KFC used to be a high class restaurant that served food in plates and had metal forks and knives.
They have free flow of soft drinks too!!

[*]The most vulgar thing you said was a55hole and idiot and THE MOST EXTREME WAS 'chicken pie'...you just couldn't bring yourself to say the hokkien translation.
Or say '700' in chinese. You '700'!!

[*]Catching and pepsi-cola was the IN thing, and twist was the magic word.
Pepsi-cola 1,2,3

[*]CDIS was your best friend.
EPB bookshop is your second best.

[*]Waterbottles were slung around your neck and a must everywhere you went.
Waterbottle is a symbol of status. If you got those 'high-end' drinking straw pop-out type, you win liao. Must have cartoon characters on your waterbottle too.

[*]Girls played five stones and boys played with marbles.
Boys vs Girls, the battle of zero-point!!

[*]Science was fun with the Balsam and the Angsana being the most important plants of our lives, guppies and swordtail being the most important fishes.
Hahahahaha, so true! :bsmilie:

[*]Your form teacher taught you Maths, Science and English.
If he's a guy, he'll' probably teach you P.E too.

[*]There would be spelling tests and mental sums to do almost everyday (you hated them)
Dictation is the worst!!

[*]Collecting and battling erasers was a pastime for boys.
Ice-cream sticks also.

[*]You got booked for muddy shoes in class.
We'll have this white creamy stuff that we will apply to our sch shoes to make it look white. Those lazy to wash their shoe will apply tons of this stuff.
