Worth Upgrading to Full Frame

Considering the D700 but wonder worth spending on the $3500 body?

I do lots of Macros , getting Full Frame means my Macros won't be as close to the object?

The 18-200VR that I have is very useful when it comes to travel ,on full frame there isn't an equivalent. I find it very usefull when I take parades as the 200mm = 300mm on a DX.

My friend who bought a 5D Mark II said that pictures taken are worst than his 40D because Full Frame cameras have more noise & in terms of picture quality , there is no improvement.

Wow, 5d mk2 has more noise than a 40D and worse image quality??? Ah, full frame, due to it's larger sensor size will by nature, give you better noise control. Also with the 5d mk2, you need to use "good" lenses as it's testing the limits of optic quality.

Do "you" need a full frame camera is the question you should be asking yourself. Are the differences in full frame versus cropped worth it for you to spend the money on?

your friend don't know how to use camera, 5d mark II < 40d is laughable, impossible, if this is the case who want to buy? i bet he use digital lenses on the mark II :bsmilie:

but that said, not everyone needs a full frame

Full frame have better quality and better noise control, that is what you are paying for.

For Macro, the minimum focus is remain the same when shooting, but the downside is FX 1:1 is 1.5X smaller that DX 1:1. The advantage is that the can have better quality images even in shaded forest.

For me, i bring both my D700 and D300 for my macro outing, different lighting condition, subject and desired result will decide which camera i'm using.

I will not use my D300 unless i need the 1.5X magnification rate over D700, the result is simple, the details captured by FX sensor is awesome after compare both camera.

But if you are those who just shoot for fun, DX sensor is a better choice when doing macro.

pic quality in a blind test maybe cannot tell apart... but noise... full frame wins hands down...

Major differences in noise control. Mind you, I'm using the old 5D.

I'm using a 50D. When I looked at the shots taken by my camera and a 5D at 3200 iso.. needless to say I was feeling quite

Full frame means you'll have much more "canvas" to work with and crop as desired. After all, APS-C is just a center crop.

I'll prefer full frame for the added sharpness and detail, as well as dynamic range.

Your friend's review is the first of its kind man. 5D series is fame for gd noise control and the 5D2 is even better at higher iso. Maybe your friend is right. does he need another 40D? i can exchange with him.

PnS is better for use in shooting macro. I have seen LX3's beautiful macro pictures before.

just remember that DOF is very important as you get very(too) close to the subject.

Stick with your DX and throw in $ to get a better macro lens instead if i m u..
