Hi Guys,

Intro:
I am a new member of this community!!:) Well, I'm not very new or very professional in my photography skills but I'm pretty good in using my handphone camera.

My dad just recently passed me his Nikon SLR camera which I have no idea what to use it for as it does not give me what digital gives. But I do not want to see a camera put to waste just by sitting there. So I am eager to learn and hope you guys can guide me along the way as it really takes skills and years of experience.

First post of mine, I have a question, How do I use a Nikon SLR, I know it sounds stupid, but I mean literally basic of how to capture an ideal image clearly and projects the story out? I don't know but maybe you guys can help me by providing me a bit more info? ;)

Welcome to CS! First off, you'll need to know which SLR body have you got, whether it's Autofocus (AF) or Manualfocus (MF). You'll need a lens, batteries, and of course, a roll of film.

For a start, I'd suggest you google the camera model, and it's related user manual. MIR photography is a good place to start if it's a MF camera body. Have fun!

To operate a camera: check for the manual. It will tell you how to set certain parameters. Old manuals are available online, either at Nikon website or at other sites. Google helps.
For all the rest of "how to capture an ideal image clearly" you will need to learn about how photography works.
Two aspects I can see here: Exposure and Composition.
For exposure and what is all done automatically in all the digital cameras you might want to have a look at the Newbies Corner, Photography Notes for Newbies. In addition you can check in bookstores for Brian Peterson's "Understanding Exposure". The basics of exposure are valid for all cameras, regardless whether digital or film.
For Composition you can also check your library, plenty of books there depending on your style (portrait, landscape, street candid etc) or use Google to find the numerous pages dealing with the topic. Digital Photography School is a good pace to start with plenty of tips.
