Hi all,

i intend to get a versatile lens + a camera body.
what would be the best options?
my budget is S$1500.

a. Olympus E420/E520 + I/II
b. Nikon D60/D80/D5000 + II/III
c. Canon 450D + II/III

*
I. Zuiko 14-45 F2.8
II. Tamron 17-50 F2.8
III. Sigma 18-50 F2.8 Marco

Due to the crop factor, 17mm on 4/3 is like 34mm which is not quite wide enough for wide. You might have to stretch your budget a bit for the combinations.

E520+14-54, I assume you are talking about the 14-54 since you say f/2.8, but I think it is not a constant f/2.8.
D5000+Tamron
450D+Tamron

Which one to choose depends on your own preference. All are good, but in different ways.

20D+17-50mm Tamron+580EX2

I saw a very new 20D at TCW just now.

me - d5000 + tamron 17-50
d80/60 uses older sensor which i dun like for higher iso shots.

no comments on the rest as I have not touch those cameras.

The Nikon D5000 and Tamron 17-50 would be a good choice. Shld cost u ard $1300-1400. Maybe still have $100 can get a dry cabi or bag. :bsmilie:

I'd suggest getting an A300 and Tamron 17-50. At least you get high-speed autofocus in liveview mode.

Nowadays Tamron seems more expensive, coz most shop quote around $650 for local set, so don't think can squeeze in the tamron at 1.3-1.4k.

Sony would be good for liveview, but do note that it is done at the expense of the size of the viewfinder.

My vote: D5000 + Tamron 17-50mm......

You might want to consider a Pentax. It will fall within you budget and then some.

Prices taken from the Price List thread which will be as of July 1st.
K-m Dual LENS KIT(DAL 18-55 mm + DAL 50-200 mm):SGD 831.14

K20D Body Only:SGD 1,069.12
K20D Body+DA 18-55mm ALII lens:SGD 1,242.52
Weather Sealed, Nice colors, choice of all K-mount lenses ever produced, Pentax Limited lenses, Pentax M42 lenses using adapter, On camera shake reduction, Support for Manual focus lenses, Advanced Amateur features for a very affordable price.
Pair this with a
DA 50-200MM F4-5.6ED :SGD 329.94,
and you should be well covered.

Try to look the output of photo at dpreview on the camera you interested. Over here, in the specific thread, you can check out the output too. Then think abt the lens. =)

depends you use for what and your current skill level.

Unless you are doing action or events, an entry level dslr + 18-200 + flash is enough for starters till you find out what is limiting your system.

i would pick d5000 + tamron 17-50. but i think 1.5k is not enough assuming u are buying brand new.

d60 and tamron 17-50 will be nice too. remember that u still need $ for dry cabinets, maybe a cheap sb400, tripod, bag, etc.

Go for canon! I've personally owned an olympus e-410 it was horrible and the colour processing was no match for the notorious canon digic 3 or 4. Nikon lenses are sharper but their bodies ain't that good.tamron feels abit plasticy not much of any assurance about the build quality.adding on, olympus does not have a hand grip yet the screen is small and canon's camera standard is 3.0inches big.
A reccomeded place to go is Cathay photo or alan photo, my friend recently bought a 500D at sim lim for about SGD800

Your advise is inaccurate.
- Olympus 's color -
try comparing the latest E620 with the latest Cannon 500D , for apple to apple

- Olympus 's screen
body is small , of cse screen is smaller ...

- Nikon's lens sharper
again dependings on what lens you are comparing to

- Nikon's body
which body you are comparing to?

*nodding* Your stand must be neutral so TS won't be confused! :p

Firstly its not a refurbished set because he boght it from pixels pixels at sim lim, you have to bargain. By the was I use an EOS 40D
I used to own a Olmypus E-410 which is comparitively worst. Although olympus has the art filters but still lousy.

You're comparing an older, budget entry-level Olympus against a mid-range Canon? Not quite fair, don't you think?

Actually no i'm comparing the EOS 500D to the horribly acclamed Olympus.

Nikon lenses are sharper but their bodies ain't that good.

LOL

Post of the year!!! I've not heard of Nikon mirrors falling out of the body. And ergonomics wise, Nikon regularly beats Canon in reviews. Not to mention Autofocus.

canon's camera standard is 3.0inches big.

On all new cameras that's the standard anyway. And the 40D had a low resolution compared to the rival cameras.

Ew. Refurb.
