This is my first post here!! :)
I was wondering if anyone has anything to say about my decision or better recommendations?

I'm 'upgrading' from my canon G9 to a dslr.
What I intend to get after my school exams finish:

Nikon D90 with 18-105 kit lens.
AF 50mm f/1.8D or DX 35mm f/1.8G?
maybe a AF-S Zoom 70-300mm.

Any thoughts on this?
I'm also not very sure where to buy from as I think I'm quite price sensitive and I must absolutely get good packages. :D

PS. I don't know if it seems to be too much since it's my first dslr.

If you can get it.. then you won't regret it. I'm stuck with my newbie 1000D because I didn't know better. lol

Welcome to CS. For price wise. check out the marketplace on both Canon and Nikon price guide. they constantly update the latest price for the camera and accessories.

Make a search if you wan to know more abt the shops.
If price and shop name is imptnt to you, go to Cathay Photo. =)

thanks! I've been watching and checking out a lot in the marketplace for all the nikon stuff
(I've always been so crazy about cameras that I recently neglected my studies a little. :()

cathay photo has good service and prices? what about ms colour? i know i'm a real newbie about all this. i guess i'm more package-sensitive than price sensitive too. HAHA.

I suggest also looking beyong the C and N camps. Sony, Pentax and Olympus make great cameras too.

Do not neglect ur studies as it is important/ =)

MS Color is not a bad choice as well. But they can be a little on high side if you are not aware of the price. Generally speaking, they are fine.

There are bad name shop around, but most imptnt is to know the people. If you dun mind grey set, TCWS is consider not that bad.

Have fun searching around. The best time to get your stuff is usually the PC/ IT/Comex/Sitex period, because more package giving too. But also depend on situation too.

If its your first DSLR, maybe you wana go for 2nd stuff? A d200 would be pretty reasonable. Well you won't go wrong with a D90 as well. I have the 50mm F1.8, its a great lens. Always with me if i take the cam out. 35mm F1.8 i've never used it before so i can't give any comments for that. The sigma 30mm F1.4 is great thou :p That's going to be my next lens. But not so soon.

sigma's 30mm is a little expensive isn't it? would a d200 be too advanced as compared to a d90? thanks anyway!

I personally think that you should stick to your kit lens first... then you'll develop your skill and style... by that time you should know what lenses you need most and add on to that... that 18-105mm VR is a good lens...

Generally i find that MS color's prices are slightly cheaper than the rest IF you pay cash. Also their service is quite excellent and most of the staff are friendly and helpful.

Yea it kinda expensive but it also depends on your luck. My friend got his for $300 plus in bns. I was like "!@#$%^" !!!
Why would a d200 be too advance? I pick a d200 because of the "image" it give the photographer. When i say "image" i don't mean the photos.
This is the way i see it:

D60 - I'm new, i'm not sure what i want
D70 - D90 - I really do like and want to learn more
D200 - D300 - I'm serious about this, and i know what i want
D700 - Its time to move on to FX
D3 - I have money and my D3 is gona make more... :D

Well i hope i don't offend anyone

1 thing at a time. No need to rush. Go for D90 as it's your learning stage. Unless you have money to pour, D200. Because for dSLR stage, lens fever will come first, then, camera body. =)

I change my camera 3 times before I decided what/ why I want this. =)

Hmmm lets use car's as an example
D60 - Picanto
D90 - Vios
D300 - Evo
D700 - Porche
D3 - Ferrari

So thats a very drastic version of what i mean by image :)
Its like what people think of you at first sight.

OH. THAT 'image'. haha. d90 as a vios? oh no!! :D btw, I'm a girl and not that into cars. But I love porches and lamborghinis. HAHA.

Porches are essentially large ground-floor balconies at the front of the house. Porsche, on the other hand, is a great Stuttgart car manufacturer. ;)

haha sorry for the spelling error?

Whether you start with a D90/D200/D300, you won't go wrong.
Btw a 2nd hand D200 would probably be cheaper compared to a D90 by a bit.
Slowly build your gear. Get a dry cabinet as well... Its very important.

If you can afford, D90 is one of the most valued for $$ IMO.
The 18-105 kit lens covers a good range and VR, hence it actually make a good walkabt lens.
Other than that you can select the 35mm f/1.8 or the cheaper 50mm f/1.8 for prime add-on.
Get a few E-quotes from the various stores like Cathay Photo, MS Color and John3:16.
While IMO, I think John offer the best customer experience but they might not be the cheapest tho. :)
Good luck in your purchase but don't neglect your studies!

One more thing to note.

I'd chose a D200 over the double digit bodies for another reason. SD cards and CDF cards. I find the CF cards more reliable and better than the SD cards. :)
