Hoya HD Filter - UV or Protector???

Hi everyone,

Am thinking of getting a Hoya HD Filter, should i get the UV or the Protector???

Would there be any difference in the IQ?

Regarding the price, i have asked ard. Not sure if the price of these filters are this high.

The Protector cost ard $110 and the UV cost ard $130.

Initially i thought they will cost below $100.

Can't really decide on which to get? :dunno::dunno::dunno:

The more reputable ones chances of them "anyhow" quote is lesser and maybe you mixed them up

Why do you need a filter? Why do you need a protector? Although quality filters won't affect your image still the question is why do you want to put something in front of a lens that was designed to work without any filter? Being alert and careful also helps to prevent camera damage where no filter would help.
Also, read up about filter flare and ghosting. These are side effects that will come in under certain conditions. Get a hood. Prevents stray light coming in and acts as protector as well. Get something because you know that you need it, not just because many people put it on.

Looking at the 67mm, the shops i did ask are CP, AP-Funan, HN-Funan and Orient.

There are abt $5-$10 difference in between frm these shops.

the peace of mind of not scratching the lens is worth it to use a filter I feel.

Thanks Octarine , i did ask myself the abv questions. But my idea is if the filter can prevent scratches, etc partly due to my carelesses and forgetfulness of the placement of the cap, i wouldn't mind getting.

well what size filters are u looking at? not sure bout u, but for filters i tend to spend it accordingly to the cost of the lens; lens more expensive, use a better filter. no point using a filter which will affect IQ of a lens which give gd IQ.

decide for yourself whether u need a filter, we all use and handle our cameras differently. u don't want to accidentally scratch the glass of ur lens one day only to realise a filter would have minimised damage cost.

Then there is a cheaper way then just getting filters - OP has 3rd party lens caps that come with a string attached. Although .. you might look like all those tourists with their small video cameras, the lens caps always swing and dangle around on a string

thks, but i am referring to hoya HD UV and hoya HD protector. both are hardened glass... any idea the diff?

Hoya UV absorbs ultraviolet rays while Hoya Protector merely protect the lens.

DSLRs' anti-alias filters built in front of sensors already have coating to avoid UV rays so technically, having UV filter on your lenses is merely for protection too.

Just get ready to take it off especially during night shooting. My shots are riddled with flares from lights.
