Tripod VS Monopod

why do ppl want to use monopod as it can't stand by itself.

coz is lighter to travel around?
cheaper?

what are the benefit using monopod?
and do you need to add on the ballhead for monopod?

Better stabilization and lesser effort for your arms especially if you're a sports photographer who will standby at one position with a long and heavy tele lens. Actually, not just sports la, as long as you're stationed in a particular location for a period of time for a shoot like red carpet, fashion runway etc, it will help you. More often than not, these people would be using heavier than the usual standard zoom lenses.

Of course, it's lightweight and easy to carry around as well, However, a monopod is not a tripod so it can help to get by some petty regulations and restrictions too.

i use my monopod when

1. i am going to use a big and heavy lens
2. doing panning
3. don't need to keep the camera absolutely still

because
it is lighter than a tripod
easier to move around

but if you need to keep the camera absolutely still for really long exposures and/or to prevent camera shake
use a tripod

Different roles. Monopod doesn work as a light weight tripod replacement.

Helps in hold up ur larger / bulkier lenses where in places u can't deploy a tripod due to limited space, or a tripod would be impractical / inconvenient.

becoz i planning a trip to HK in this couple of weeks. i dun think i will bring it to HK and it too heavy and troublesome if i need to move ard in HK streets.

so a monopod will be more suitable right?
if yes, then i will get one in HK. any monopod to recommend? my budget is ard 200-300

Do u foresee urself using a monopod for the streets when u r walking ard ?
thought might be more mobile just hand hold and walk and shoot.

A monopod head is a plus minus. It itself provides mobility from the pivoting and many users are happy with just working so. of course if u need to swivel vertically up/down, u can use a small ballhead / panhead.

There are lots of selection to choose from at Cathay. Personally I love something lighter and more compact

I advise you no need to get a monopod if you gonna do street shots with the 18-200 or the 50mm. No point really, and makes your subjects wary of you.

WIth 200-300, you can get a very good one. Go for a gitzo:bsmilie:

for HK, i would actually bring a tripod

1. skyline at night
2. view from the peak
3. fireworks at disneyland

actually the last time i went to HK i brought along a slik table pod

but now that i have bought a gitzo 1541T i will no longer be using the table pod

look in the Land/City-scapes and Travel gallery for more reasons to bring a tripod instead

I have both and it depends on what I am trying to shoot for the day.

If I am hunting for butterflies, which are highly mobile and will not allow me to set up a tripod and shoot them at leisure, then I'll take the monopod out for added stability.

If I am shooting landscapes, still life, or insects which allows me to set up tripods, then I'll take out the tripod.

I tried this combination of tripod/monopod at penisula. the same building where catay photo is. Its located on the 2nd storey opposite bata. The photo shop with the wide selection of bags. The problem with the set is that since the center column doubles as a monopod, its height prevented the tripod to get low on all legs. Cant remember the model thou. Sorry about that. I did see a few variations of it with different product names on it which i have not even heard off. :bigeyes:

I use monopod for its smaller footprint and being easily to quickly change position and continue shooting
