hey guys..

i kinda interested in photography as a number of friends have started it..

i am looking for a second hand dslr from BnS.

which brand would you recommend, most of my friend are using canon dslr kinda paning towards it. but open to other brand from what i understand canon and nikon built their IS/VR function(IS lens alot more expensive compared to non IS) in the lens while sony built it in their body. just wondering which system is more robust for shaky hand/low light condition.

Hello...welcome.

All entry level cams are able to provide good decent pictures if you use them within their limits. All systems will have their strong & weak points, choose something that suits you & not what your friends are using as you are the one using the cam not your friends.

Sony has just announced a couple of new cams yesterday and Pentax has announced a new cam too. These 2 brands offer build in stabiliser which I find is good for people like me who have shaky hands, although some will beg to differ.

Brand is not the most important factor. Because almost all cameras, at entry-level, can produce good images.

You should look at your budget and the costs of lenses and flashes, since you might buy them in the future. Also look at the user-friendliness of the cameras and other related equipment.

Canon and Nikon to start with for beginners since support is just about everywhere and once you know what is what, feel free to pick the camera that best fits your usage. I myself use a K20D from a 300D.

Support in what way? The Alpha community here is pretty big, and you can get support and maintenence at any SonyStyle.

support as in literature, videos and even rental..especially if friends using canon/nikon systems, possible to share lenses. Using converters, can even use nikon lens on canon bodies. Pretty friendly for beginners to dslr or those who simply use the Green option.

edit Now waiting if A350 will have any fire sale once the new models out..i find the sony implementation of Live View pretty useful. K20D plus either a E620 or A350 would be interesting.

i have tried canon 20d and 450d both with 18-55 IS and non IS.
Conclusion: 20d thou and old cam still produce pretty good image but LCD too tiny, hard to acturely see details. 450d LCD alot bigger nicer. for me i think the LCD part score quite abit of points. Lastly the IS makes quite alot abit of different. Metal bodies and plastic bodies does it matters. metal bodies takes beating better?

Yesterday i when tampines 1 tried out the sony alpha the controls are quite different from canon. For the alpha there is a setting where u can control the aspect ratio of the picture, isit the same as cropping for the other brand without this function.

yet to try nikon, heard nikon not all their lens have motor, so some body support some don`t for af. Not really newbie friendly i guess.

If Do, what kind of post processing should be done.

Lastly u guys save ur pics in RAW or jpec or both.

Yes - a bit - even for cropping only (if everyone agree that cropping is PP). What kind of PP, depends.

I read a book from Michael Freeman (I think), one of his tip is "shoot for the future". This mean, even if your "now" photos are crap, don't delete it straight away. When we develop photography and PP skill or if there are a better PP software in future, these crap photos might be useful - and probably can turn out to a "not so crap" (or even good) images. So, to answer your question, I shoot RAW - and shoot for the future. Save in the bank, and convert it to JPG for PP. My preference though.

yes i do pp.
it varies from photo to photo what i do. i dont think there's a cold hard fast rule that u should pp something

i save in raw so easier for PP
