Hi all, is it possible to bargain when buying first hand lens from shops? I was intending to buy a lens and was wondering is it possible to ask them to throw in a UV filter or something? Just don't want to offend the shop owners so try to ask around before i go down! Thanks!

if you can... just ask for an equote from the few usual stores.. equotes are almost always lower price then what your bargaining can get.. :bsmilie:

but lets say i print out the equote go to the shop and buy.. am i still able to ask them to throw in a uv filter before i make purchase? or better not?

Very unlikely.

Depends where you go. I think bargainng is still possible depending where you are. I don't think you can get 'discount' or 'freebies' if you go Harvey Norman or sonystyles or Canon but if you go retails shops like MSC, CP or OP etc. It won't hurt to ask.

Why not. :bsmilie: Singaporeans are pretty much bargain hunters, no harm asking.
Of course u do not ask for unrealistic discounts and sound impolite and not sincere.

The kind of filter that a shop might include as a freebie, you might not want (i.e. tiffen, steinzeiger, etc.)

The kind of filter that you would want, they for sure won't include as a freebie (i.e. B+W, Heliopan, etc.)

More straightforward to bargain for a discount I think.

i see no harm in asking for a few bucks off their price :)

but e-quote i dun think they will give u more discount... but u can try asking for discount on a new piece of filter that you're getting for the lens!

if you buy enough of things from the same shop, they will give you best discount and service the moment you walk into their shop.

or else you just do your homework by surf CS, call them, email them for best offer.

If you want to like to do bargaining like what many people do in pasar malam or wet market, and enjoy it very much, by all mean.

BTW, Tiffen filters are not what one would consider as freebie, el cheapo filters. :nono:

whoops, think I was thinking of tokina instead.

Thank you all for your replies. I was thinking to get the Canon 50mm F1.8 II, so what filters should i be looking at? I wouldn't want something too expensive? Sorry as i'm on a tight budget!:)

if u buy this lens, even if they give u a free filter, it will spoilt ur image for sure... hee.. cos i got experience.. but they will surely tell u same like good one... but i tried, it really spoilt my image... hee... now using a 20yrs old canon protect filter.. image better than the free one...

hmm those cheap filter will spoil the quality of image? how about UV filters like the one from HOYA? any recommendations?

i never use hoya one before.. i only got a lousy free filter.. and a canon protect.. the canon protect is same image quality with or without filter... to me at least.. but with the lousy free filter, image is distorted.. i test on 2D plane.. so result confirm is correct.. hee...

can get the canon protect from shops? how much is it selling for?

hoya is good stuff.. no worries.. $18 per piece.. =]

i dnt knw the price... mine i find in the store room one.. infested with fungus.. i clean already still got stain.. but the result is better than the lousy one.. so i use it anyway... hee.. i oso no money...

I used my 50mm f/1.8 without a filter. It exhibited worse image quality with a filter than without, and was especially prone to flaring and ghosting.

I bought my lens using equote at CP-P. They said that's the lowest price, cannot even throw in an UV filter :(
