Have you even tried comparing the product description pages? Please, don't be lazy and expect to be spoonfed. The differences are quite obvious.

The most obvious difference having the motor in the lens in the AFS version that allows digital bodies like the D40/40X/60 to AF, and the AFS allows full time manual override.

There are many other changes such as better built, optics ( the revised optics in the AFS might have an edge in this respect such as chromatic aberrations, and some say bokeh ). The AFS might AF a little bit slower than the AFD due to longer rotational difference.

There are multiple one to one comparisons on the net between the two.

In the end it is up to u and the budget to decide if the AFS is worth the buck
Personally I will still stick to my trusty 50mm AFD in discount of the above.

Hi, i am intending to get D700 and normal len to start. Is f1.4D more than enough for D700 or f1.4G which have the extra features for D700?
No constraint on budget.
By the way, AF-S stand for what huh?
Tks.

No constraint on budget then get the newer revised versions.

AF-S: Autofocus Silent
Focusing is driven by a "Silent Wave" motor in the lens instead of the focus drive motor in the camera. AF-S lenses focus faster than standard AF-Nikkors and almost completely silently. AF-S lenses with a "II" designation weigh less and are generally smaller than their equivalent predecessors.

- From the Glossary of Nikkor lens terms

The AFD 50mm does not have the silent wave motor in the lens, and AF is driven by the motor in ur D700 body.

wow, rich kid with no budget constrain.

since you have no budget constrain, what you waiting for?
D3X + 14-24 + 24-70 + 70-200.. ASAP..
when you get those above, you will have no time for 50 f/1.4 be it AFS or AFD..
the 3 lenses will keep you busy enough for a long time.. :D

Lol...sorry for the wrong interpretation, am saying no constraint on purchasing f1.4G which cost additional few hundred difference of f1.4D. Not saying no constraint on getting others lenses. Kekeke....

oh! hahaa.. ok.

for me i will go for AFD version since it has the aperture ring and i can use it on my MF SLRs. AFS G lenses is crippled without the aperture ring so nope, unless i shoot F/22 through out. :D

Both of you just asking for it? :dunno:

TS: you might want to read Ken Rockwell's pages on the 2 lenses. His reviews tend to be quite easy to read, though you should take them with a pinch of salt.

Here are the links: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/5014af.htm and http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/50mm-f14-afs.htm

Basically, AFS = motor on lens -> more expensive.
G = no aperture ring = handicapped on most Nikon film SLRs
7 straight blades vs 9 rounded blades -> difference in bokeh quality/characteristics.

Personally, I don't like both lenses, but that is just me. Happy learning.

So, after reading the product descriptions, what did you see the differences are? Then, if you don't know what SWM is, did you try researching that and reading up on it? Nope? So oyu have nothing better to do than call people names?

Depends largely on wat body you're using. If you're using an old film body like the FM2, get the D version, if not get the G version.

By the way atwee, there's a big difference between being "rude" and name calling. Since you're a newbie, just a friendly warning...there are threads which are "ruder".

Let I have said, this a forum for newbies. I am very new to all these and I wish to learn more. I don't understand the terms used on the device after reading up and I am just seeking for advices.

What are you trying to proof yourself here?

If you have a bad childhood that is your problem!

Btw, I don't called people names, I only called rude people A55hole!!!!

Please be very careful in your accusations.

Please be very careful in your accusations.

You base on your own perception and judged me for being lazy and accused me of expecting to be spoon-fed!! You are not in any position to make such remarks.

I did read up and I am just asking a simple question for a more better understanding. I asked it in a newbie forum, what is so wrong with that???

Since you claimed that your childhood is great then what is your true reason for behaving abnormal and bullying people like this? Again, what are you trying to proof here?
