Dragon Boat event coverage - Lens Recommendation

Guys, I need some help.

I've got a Dragon boat event to cover over the next weekend but I'm lack of the proper lens to cover this event.

My intention is to rent a lens to cover the event and as such, would need recommendations from the more experienced photogs here as to what lens I should rent.

if you are on a x1.6 or x1.5 sensor, I would say ... get a 300mm F2.8 with x1.4TC :thumbsup:

If you are on FF body, then a 500mm will be good, but... I don't think there is 500mm lens for rent.

what do you want to take?

if one person or a couple in action? Then you need long tele lense. Long means 200 mm and above, depending on your camera.

if a group or the boat as a whole or a few boats, then standard tele lense is adequate. Standard means less than 100 mm.

you may want to check out olympus DSLR which is 2x crop and check out the 70-300mm tele lense. That should be good for dragon boat as it is held during daytime and it should be sunny (dragon boat race rarely held during rainy season, and I think event will be cancelled if it rains). By the way this lense is good only if there is bright light (daytime). It is not a low light lense (it will be difficult to use).

you most likely will NOT be able to rent anything longer than 300mm F2.8
Of course, it will also depends on the distance of the subject to you and what type of shots you intend to take.

As per the EXIF information.
focal length is 600mm (300mm F/4 + 2x TC was used )
even at a bright sunny day like this, I have to use ISO-400 due to the fact that after adding a 2xTC, I loose 1 F-stop.

try to use shutter faster than 1/250sec...

power picture man! Wad i wanna capture is something like that.. U mean i cant rent anything above 300mm? Sheesh..

I've gotta take the action when they start off.. mid till end.. would a 300mm (assuming that that's the max I can rent) be adequate for the event in your opinion?

It all depends how much light you have to work with. In ideal sunny condition, even a entry level 70-300mm can give satisfactory results.

so if the event goes on till 6 plus which is considered pretty dark, still have to up the iso even if using F2.8 300mm prime.

Yes PowerUp is right. I'm covering the event roughly about 2pm onwards at Bedok Reservoir. Lighting would become a problem roughly abt 5.30pm onwards.

Sheesh... anyone else with any other recommendations?

What about manual lens? I know it isn't gonna be the best of ideas getting a manual lens for such an event but that's what my fren has at the moment.

Would it be a ok to use the manual lens instead? I'm just afraid that I'm unable to rent the lens of the best possible focal length to cover this event. Then I would ultimately have to use the manual lens with the TC attached to it.
