Hi fellow CSers, especially those that are from Hong Kong and been to Hong Kong! I will be visiting HK real soon and I have read up plenty about where and what to shoot over there.

1 serious doubt that i cannot seem to find any answers for online, is where to shoot Tsing Ma Bridge from? Preferably night shots!

The obvious vantage point will be to Lantau Link Visitor Centra and Viewing Platform however it's stated "The Visitors Centre is opened from 10:00 am to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays (closed on Wednesday); from 10:00 am to 6:30 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and most of the public holidays."

That renders shooting Tsing Ma Bridge at night seemingly impossible. Is there any place that I can go to on Tsing Yi or Ma Wan to capture night shots of the bridge? Help or advice here will be deeply appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

(mutter, i pressed refresh and my long long post is gone, i shall rewrite it)

when i went to hong kong in summer 08, i contacted chun lo from here regarding locations of good views of tsing ma bridge, most of his shots are taken on MA WAN, you can check them out here:

along with other excellent shots of the wilder side of hong kong. anyways, if i am not wrong , #2 and #3 are taken right beneath the bridge as seen here from the visitor centre

frankly speaking, the view from the visitor centre is not fantastic at all, i would give it a miss. it tends to be blocked by trees that have been planted everywhere. i think chun lo had replied me with pretty helpful instructions on how to get to #2 and #3 location, along with #1; so it should be there. the trouble is that if you want to get to the location of #2 and #3, you probably need more research than i had done, i tried walking to the location from the visitor centre, it is not possible, because the roads seem linked by a pretty busy highway, and there is a highway police station there which will turn back people they see walking along the highway.

you can get to ma wan by ferry from central pier if i do not remember wrong, there is nothing else much to do there but photography, but it is a very quaint little interesting offshore island, remember to bring insect repellent because some parts are really swarming with mosquitoes due to poor maintenance and presence of huge bodies of stagnant water here and there.

there is a beach not that far from the ferry terminal, you can take bus but i think i just anyhow walk in the general direction and found it. the town seemed pretty safe to me and i didn't really feel unsafe even when i was alone. here you can get views like this:

i suspect #1 is taken to the left of this area, there is a dolphin statue and a pier there as well, but i didn't do research properly at that time, tried to climb further right (it is all rocks) and gave up after a while. the fishermen there were very amused. they were pretty friendly and helpful, even though we couldn't really communicate properly because my cantonese is seriously watery.

nearer the ferry terminal there is a much more easily accessible and easy-to-find beach with pretty nice rocks you can use as foreground:

please note that you will probably be at least knee deep in water to get to those rocks to have a less hindered view of the bridge. i cannot remember how deep exactly, i think waist deep.

my suggestion is use google maps, and do proper planning, and make sure there is good weather when you go. you can also try contacting chun lo on pbase, he is a very nice person. cheers!

wow! waist-deep in the water! a bit scary if there is incoming tide. and with an expensive camera in your hands, i can't imagine the consequences if we loose our footing among the rock crevices.

but it is hardcore and it gives you the best pictures! :)

thanks so much for the valuable info! i will google up on ma wan b4 my actual trip. however my only concern is going back to the hotel from there as i might stay there till near 8? how do i get transport back?

check the ferry timings back to mainland, assuming you staying on mainland, i remember they run till pretty late.

weekends different from weekdays, IIRC, but it is a while ago. they have timetables at the pier at central, so don't worry, can also ask before you go.

ooh, so you mean there is actually ferry back from ma wan / tsing yi to central pier? i will be living in yau ma tei, not hk island. since there is ferry to central i suppose there will be ferry to TST as well?

Not necessarily. The ferries might not be running between the outlay islands and central/Wanchai on the island side.

But, in HK, there are 3 cross harbour tunnels for car and 2 more for MTR trains so as long as you can get back to HK main island, you should not have problem getting back to where you stay in Kowloon side.

EDIT: The ferries might be running between the outlay islands and central/Wanchai on the island side.

what is TST? tsim tsa tsui?

yes, there is ferry back from ma wan to central pier, of course.. if not the poor residents of ma wan must have car..

anyways, i don't think there is ferry to tsim tsa tsui or yau ma tei, but you can easily take a short train down to central. the mtr is very convenient after all. anyways, you can say it is expensive but i was there for photography, so i didn't spend that much time eating, which is quite a pity, but there is little or no delicate food to be found on most of the outlying islands. the money saved on food use on transport lor, then buy bread from all the hong kong bakeries to eat in hotel room, etc.

i stayed at tsim tsa tsui ulu area the last time i was there, usually got back about 9.30 pm to the nearest mtr, and then slowly walk back alone, was quite safe to be honest.
