Another newbie....

Just decided to get myself a Canon 40D. Have been reading around and trying to decide which lens should i get to start with...well, thinking of getting Tamron 17-50 f2.8 as it seems not a bad choice for a day-to day use...of coz, $$$$ factor...

Good combo to start off?

all suggestions welcome..

hmm...can try A700/D300 with tamron's 17-50 f2.8
or can also try A700/D300 with sigma's new 24-70 f2.8??

If you are not reading the threads properly, I'd sugest you keep your fingers to yourself and dun bother replying.

The TS is asking about Canon gear and you blabber on about a Nikon lens. :nono:


To the TS, it all depends on what you wanna shoot. The Tamron 17-50 is a cheap f2.8 lens to start off with.

are u just buyin the body only?

wat is ur style of shooting?

tammy 17-50 gd for general purpose....

perhaps u can get also a 50mm F1.8 + 55-250 IS.

thks for all the suggestions...guess i will be taking more portraits and landscapes esp on holidays...

yup, i just went ahead to order the body and thot of looking arund for a lens that is versatile with my limited budget instead of getting the kit...

one more qn, shld i be considering to get a flashgun at this point of time?

you are getting the BBB sickness haha
just start out with tammy 17-50 and your camera body
after you save up then continue with what you reali need like flash or tele lens
dont 1 shot buy everything you want

if i were you, try to buy the kit. Even kit lens is way better IQ than any compact camera. U will be satisfy with it for long enough time until u become familiar with DSLR. Right everyone?

The 40D and 17-50 tammy would be a good enough start.

External flash can be bought later if you feel you really need it.

If you have the budget for it, why not....

But I would advise you to go slow and get the hang of the equipment first... Keep practising and see how you can improve the skills first before acquiring much more gear...

guess hv to put on hold of getting any new gear after i get the hang of my camera...for now, just settle with the tamron lens.

collecting my camera tomorrow, can't wait to get hold of it...

sorry guys, hv to ask this question on the Tamron lens as i am getting a copy tomorrow.

Read about Tamron 17-50mm having common front/back focusing problem. How do i check when getting the lens? Also, what is this front/back focus problem?

Recommend you get the Sigma 24-70 or Sigma 18-200. Good quality without the high price of the EF-S/EF lens....

Personally i would recommend the 18-200 ... it could cover a whole range of activities for you. I personally use this lens and it's a "follow me everywhere" lens and good for most type of shoot.

Such lens is good especially when you are just starting out and have not discover what kind of photography you like. eventually when u know what kind of photography you wanna get serious with; then you might want to purchase lens good in their respective class... e.g. EF 50mm 1.4 for portrait etc

I find it hard to agree, as the 18-200 is not that cheap in the first place.

Might as well stick to the original choice of the more affordable tammy. If really need to extend the range, there is the option of adding a 55-250. Still would not be as costly as the 18-200. Not to mention the bonus of a larger aperture over the 18-200.
