Hi! I've been using a 300D with the kit lens (i think its a 35-50mm)for quite a while and i think it's high time to get another lens.

I need a lens with better range and for low light situations w/o using flash. I have a tendency to zoom all the way in and shoot from far which is one of the main reasons i don't use flash. I have a budget of $1k +/- 200 but im willing to spend a little bit more if a better alternative is available. I read somewhere i need a lens with a minimum of f/2.8 to be somewhat effective.

Maybe im asking too much but $1k enuff ma? I still noob. :/

Can anyone give me any recommendations? It doesn't have to be a Canon lens. A compatible 3rd party will be fine.

Do you need wide angle or long telezoom?

But is 17-50mm enough? The distance i shoot is like um... a portrait shot across a single lane, 2-way street.

My habits ah.... mostly sniping in low light situations. Kinda like bird shooting right after sunset. Kinda like 6.30pm in the evening when it's not dark yet not bright either. And no, dont need wide angle. tele-zoom will do fine.

Aaah, ok, so you need tele.

portrait across a 2-lane street in low light? Are you taking pictures of your pretty neighbor in her bedroom?

Just look at the canon pricelist posted here:

http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showthread.php?t=465032

You'll see the 200mm f/2.8, the sigma APO 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM, etc etc etc

Good tele with wide aperture plus cheap doesn't really exist yet.

since you say you usually take from quite a distance and a f2.8
i was thinking 70-200 f2.8 non-is but is over ur budget if not you can go for prime lens

Haha unfortunately my neighbourhood got no chio bu, even if have i also wun do something like that and get myself into these kinds of trouble. Cheap isn't really too big an issue, just concerned about lens durability and picture quality. dun't want take 1/2 way lens conk out.

USM can already, hands steady enuff to do w/o IS. I was thinking of prime lens too because cheap and everything comes out solid. But no variable range gives me little to work with.

How large do you want to print?
If only 4R or 5R, you could still still get a prime lens in the 130-150mm range and crop as necessary.
But I think 300D resolution isn't too high. Something like a 450D would give you enough leeway to crop.

Don't think printing is on his plans; his main consideration is getting a hih enough shutter speed at tele, so he needs f/2.8 or f/4

i seldom do prints unless the pictures turn up really nice. but yeah usually 4R n put on a wall.
i think the sigma APO 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM should suffice.
