There is no fixed shutter speed. Check the ambience lighting of the hall. I have shot my school's hall, and a decent shutter speed can be had with wide angle, F/3.5, ISO400.

Bring your camera/light meter there, and check the readings before your shoot.

And another thing, take care of your WB too. Shoot RAW if needed.

Shoot in full manual. Don't trust shutter or aperature, you'd get trails. Do an exposure check with ur cam using P or M if you're experienced, set the aperature and shutter + ISO (high) till you get the exposure you want, stick to it in Manual.

for manual, shutter set to 20 per second? aperature is my weakest "subject"

Personally, no, unless you shooting RAW. Manually set your WB using grey card.

What focal lengths are you planning to shoot with?

Maybe. We don't know what the lighting will be, so it's hard to say. Best to shoot in RAW so you can adjust later if needed.

Why not try to shoot the rehersals and get some experience and at least you are prepared.

You can get your rough settings from there, your exposure, WB, composition, lighting...

Note down the rough shutter speed needed, your ISO settings, your WB settings.

Remember to find good places and positions to shoot too. :)

Make use of the rehearsal to try out the techniques then, you also may consider renting a lens for longer soom.

Dude stop saying die liow die liao la... chill man... i know u wanna take nice pics for your school event but u dun have to stress yourself out doing it... just take the advise given here and just enjoy your shoot. Whatever way the pics turn out just have fun doing it man... oh and make sure u use a tripod though unless u wanna move all over the place. :dunno:

Rmb this. Close-ups juz go for as big as possible(small number), Other shots juz use F10... this setting should be quite comfortable....

BTW, u using what lens? Is the range wide enuf?

I disagree. f/10 is already letting in too little light. For the event, shoot at your largest aperture, f/5.6
