I just purchased a set of Tiffen filters (UV, circular polarizer and Warm) for my Canon EOS 300. After I got it I realised I have purchased a set of 52mm filters for a 58mm dia lens!:embrass:

Are there any adapters which I could use for this? Or do I try and sell it off here in the marketplace?

I'd sell them.

it depends on the lens, but if you use a STEP-DOWN RING,

you might get vignetting.

better to sell them.

u can use the 52mm filters for the canon 50mm F1.8 lens if u intend to get that

Depends on the lens your using and the crop factor of your camera body, if any.

Let's say 50mm lens on a 1.5 or 1.6x crop body, and you don't often shoot very stopped down like f/8 and smaller, you probably would get away with using a step-down ring quite easily.

Preferable: sell off the filters and get the proper size.

No way of going back to the shop to exchange? :)

as suggested by some:

you can retain the UV if you intend to get a 50mm/1.8 lens since they are 52mm filter diameter. but for the cir pol and warm, i am afraid there might not be many takers since most would buy the larger size like 72mm or 77mm and use a step-up ring.

if you are not using it on wide angle, they may not vignette at all. just give it a try by holding it in front of your lens and take a shot. if all okay, you can get a 58-52mm step down ring.

Have you tried fixing the setup yet ? A step down adapter attached to a full frame lens adapted to an APS-C body might not have visible vignetting because of the crop in the centre.

Of course if the lens is optimised for APS-C camera then the mechanical vignetting is obvious.

My recommendation is the same as others : Sell.

sell it.. and make sure next time you bring the camera or lens with you. i'm a newbie myself and that's what i do ;)

No need for that. The front element is recessed enough to be protected. The filter will only cause flare and ghosting under certain conditions. Just because there are filters doesn't mean you need to screw one on every lens.

agree with your statement. Was doing a couple of portraiture shoot a wk back; was shooting with the 50mm f/1.8...

When i was shooting at a certain angle from the subject, flare appear on the picture (after that realized it was a flash reflection from a mirror)... after some trial and error... remove the filter. Viola!

Yeah...
I also have this problem. I have a 18-55mm EF-S lens which uses 58mm filters and the 50mm f/1.8. The ONLY filters which I have are 52mm filters. I tried holding it in front of my 18-55 and the result came out pretty good, with no vignetting.

I would like to know roughly how much does the adapter ring (step down) for the filter cost and where can I get it, as I tried asking MS color and they said that they do not stock this step-down ring.
