Photographer robbed during Earth Hour

31 March 2009

FAMOUS landmarks around the world, from Egyptian pyramids to the Eiffel Tower, promptly switched off lights for an hour on Saturday night in support of a worthy cause - Earth Hour.

While the lights were dimmed in Malaysia, a photographer with Sin Chew Daily was robbed of his camera and equipment worth RM30,000 ($13,000), reported the newspaper.

Ironically, the photographer, Mr Guan Jianming, was at Sun Plaza in Kuala Lumpur to take pictures of the place observing the hour-long lights-out.

He was done by 9.15pm and was about to leave when a motorbike came out suddenly from the carpark and headed towards him.

The motorcyclist snatched Mr Guan's equipment before speeding off in the darkness.

Fortunately Mr Guan was not hurt.

Sin Chew Daily reported witnesses saying that the motorcyclist had been waiting in the carpark for some time, apparently waiting to strike an unsuspecting victim in the dark.

Mr Guan later made a police report.

He was apparently one of few victims who were hit during Earth Hour.

No rise in crime rate

Checks with the police in Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya and Cheras revealed that there was no unusual rise in crime rate during that time, reported Sin Chew Daily.

The Malaysian police had made their presence felt at various Earth Hour events.

Except for the glitter of street lights, darkness covered several parts of Malaysia, from hotels on the beaches to the throbbing city centre.

At Jalan Bukit Bintang, scores of youths came dressed for the occasion - some had blinking lights on their clothes or handbags - and sat along the road to enjoy the breeze, reported New Straits Times.

More than 100,000 people took part in Earth Hour in Malaysia.

should have had a steel or titanium monopod on his free hand. the minute the cyclist try to snatch his kit...whack on the head or throw like a spear because the rider would need few moments to re-stabilize.

easier said than done.

such a pity. people gather for a worthwhile cause, and something bad happens to them...

Now we have another very good reason to bring TRIPOD for night photography.
In case any Tom, Dick or Harry want to rob or attack you, send them to hell with the tripod.

tripod not really practical as it works more like a club...monopod i think would be the most flexible but best safety is still to go in numbers even in singapore.

I thought only chef got licence walk around with weapon. Now I know photogs can carry spears & staff disguised as monopod.

I personally find that this earth hour is kinda stupid.. at that hour light is needed for security or other purposes.. instead have a campaign to look at how to save energy in our daily lifes.. like using electronic applicances that consume less electricity etc.. better then this "useless" Earth hour. After the Earth hour ppl still continueing wasting electricity..natural energy etc..

So as the police had revealed that there wasn't any unusual rise in crime rate, the victim might be considered as one of the unfortunate one being robbed.

Hope the police will be able to recover his lost equipment soon enough before he dispose of it. As he is working for the press, there will be insurance coverage I supposed.

economy is bad now.. those going to Msia, indo, thailand, china better be more careful

come to think of it.. even in Spore better becareful.. they will hv spill over effect from top managers losing job. its correct to say that these ppl wont resolve to robbing (the manager or blue collar worker).. but for them losing job in Spore will hv a ripple effect on the low paying jobs also.. some might hv to turn to robbery if things get desperate.. so even in spore i think we hv to be careful..

Your life is worth million of times than the equipment...... be smart, see the situation, if have to let go let it go... don't act like superhero with just a monopod or tripod... they just want your equipment!!

You still can buy again your lost equipment but not your life...

assess the situation is important...in my opinion provided got go for unarmed as well as physical combat training,

if like 10-1...drop everything and run.
if like 10-5...attack first. Running got chance your friend may be left behind.
if like 10-7...the 10 are asking to be hammered.

as police always say, prevention is better so be sure to go in big groups and hopefully your buddies look garang and big size.

Candles don't cause global warming. Just like the act of smoking itself has a zero net effect on global warming. But greenhouse gases are the major culprit like the carbon emission from your car.

Earth Hour will be good in a larger scale such as 'no cars worldwide' except public transport and trains.

There are existing campaigns such as "better by bus". Are you going with them? No use complaining about the world if you don't practice what you preach.

Ask everyone in the world to breath or fart less lah, sure lower the carbon dioxide level one. For places like china they need to do opposite, breath more to use their lungs to filter out the pollution in the air.

People get robbed every hour, what's so special about being robbed during earth hour? People conveniently put cause and effect together because the newspaper suggests so.

Msia is v not safe imho.

Today straitstime report state.

In KL alone. 2007 there are 1.4k rape cases.

2008 there are 4.9k rape cases . 3 fold increase.
