Hi guys and gals!

I am a newbie to DSLRs though have been playing SLRs for a few years now. Can anyone tell me which is better? EOS450D or SonyA350?

This is the sort of topic that will just lead to flame wars. Canon people will tell you 450D. Sony people will say A350.

Why not do some research and compare?

Why not list what you need in a DSLR? What are you looking for? Have you actually gone to the shops and tried both?

I used a A200 before...
wat i can say is that its Noise reduction is harsh...
In my opinion the amount of chromatic noise is a "turn off" for me
Body IS is a useful feature though..
tiltable live view is a good feature too

Carl Zeiss lenses are a tad expensive too...

dun ask me why i use a 20d now..i just like the way it feels in my hands....

y not an a700?

A Sony A350 with the CZ 24-70mm lens rocks (Got to play with my friend's set) almost prime sharp and any focus length and aperture. If you are concern about noise get Nikon D300.

Nikon D300 uses the A700 sensor, and the A700 v4 firmware gives almost identical output as the D300. ;)

Thank you for all your replies! I have made some comparisons between 450D and A350 and would like to get more feedback from fellow users before making my decision. :)

Yes, I did check out both cameras at the shop and played with them. They are pretty similar to me. Canon has better handling while Sony has more functions which is why I am still asking around for more advise.

Interesting... Most people find the handling of the A350 to be better.

Well, how important is live view to you? Do you feel that the tilting LCD screen of the A350 is a must-have?

Wow, didn't know that. I better read up, was very impressed by my friend's D300 at ISO1600. Looks like there is hope for me after all :)

If you are into entry level model, then I don't think you are overly concerned about the noise level....

Of course Canon CMOS sensors are one of the better ones in terms of noise level and I agree as I seen pictures taken at ISO1600 by EOS1000D is quite clean that I thought it was ISO400...

Anyway, I was in the same situation as you, comparing between 450D and D90 only 3 months back...

Sony has never came into my mind at all as I "still" considered them as new-comers in this field....

However, a trip to the COMEX last year completely changed my mind and I bought a A300 instead of the other 2...

Of course, I can anytime afford a D300/D700/D3 and 50D/5DmkII at that point when I was deciding....but it still voice down to why you need DSLR in the first place...

I need a small and handy camera to give me better quality pictures over PNS and my wife can also use it to take pictures of our son occassionally, so the SUPER FAST AF in LiveView and how easy to use the camera won us over!!!

Noise level wise, I dun think it's a big problem as long as you don't print bigger than A3 size even for ISO800 is still quite ok...or do you ever need to print out that big in the first place....

In summary, 450D definitely has better noise control over A350 but not very obvious unless you always look at your pictures at 100% all the time.

Colour rendering I would say Sony has better and more vibrant colours with some tweaking in camera...

Handling wise, I find 450D too small and grip is very uncomfortable when holding for long period...A350 feels more solid and it gives you the $1.3k feeling rather than the $500 feel 450D gives...

LiveView, if you need it as much as I do, A350 is now the king of the hill for AF, no one does it better as this point in time...

BTW, only Canon L lenses are good and they are also very expensive...

Best is the buyer go try both cams.
Canon has lesser noise due to CMOS sensor.
Sony has SSS built in which means what ever lenses you use got IS.

;)

Chromatic noise?

You are referring to chromatic aberration right? That is more related to the lens you using, not the camera body.

chromatic aberration

No, he's referring to the chroma blotches that are the noise reduction style applied to sony Jpegs. Looks good in print though for some reason.

If Live View is a main priority for you, then you should consider Olympus too! Don't study products by the brand or popularity, study the products to determine which suits your needs the best!

between the two, Canon has larger variety of add ons but Sony is probably one of the smartest cameras out there.

best is to go their showrooms and try.

Interesting...both live view and tilting LCD screen are good to have but not a must have. I am more inclined to get a A350 than 450D mainly with Image Stabiliser built into the camera than the lens. I didn't want to make a hasty decision and regret later.. ;)

just take note. built in IS means the the whole camera has to go for service while lens based means only the lens. have to weigh the pros and the cons.

also...can take a look of the offerings from Pentax like K-M as well as Olympus E620 if you are interested in body based IS systems.

all thats left is to see which brand supports your area of photography the most.

That's assuming the IS fails. But at least ALL lenses are stabilized.
