I just bought a cleaning kit from Cathay for $6, it comes with lens tissue, cloth, cotton buds, big blower and a bottle of lens cleaner.

I am a bit skeptical about the lens cleaner solution, really can be used to clean lens? Will it rub off the coating on the lens? Can it be used to clean UV and polarize filters, Inside and outside?

Dun worry.... the coating is quite tough and if you wanna wear them off with sandpaper, it's going to take a while....

Erm the coating toughness varies with the manufacturer's quality. B+W confirm solid build, but don't expect too much from a $8 filter.

Yeah. but why do you need to worry so much about a disposable filter?

At the most just replace it... And anyway, the front element of most of the lenses are much tougher

My filter definitely not $8, in fact it is free. ha ha ha.

Its a targus UV and Polarize kit. So dunno how tough are they.

There is a lot of scam and nonsense around ... but do you expect a photography shop with a certain reputation to sell any items that are somehow harmful to equipment (proper application provided)? Worst case the stuff is just useless, best case it does what it should do. These solutions are quite generic, be more careful with special solutions offered by some online shops and some fluids offered as "best kept secret, used by [insert your camera brand here] in their labs to clean lenses".
The blower and some care are your best friends. Try to avoid that you need to clean your lens and your filters with fluid. Get a lens hood ;)

i have never seen a coating come off filters before.

as long as you buy a minimum standard quality of filter, something like hoya or kenko, which isn't too expensive, i doubt you will have that sort of trouble.

Thanks everyone. I'll be sure to get a better polarizer. My UV is ok lah I guess.

Don't guess, better know. Plenty of feedback here if you just search for 'filter'. You'll also see what happens if you use "el cheapo" filter and you'll see when it is better not to use filters. The right tool for the right purpose.

I also use a Carl Zeiss Cleaner (those for spectacle lens one:p) to clean my UV filter..super dirty.

It does clean off the dirt and dust well with the cloth and the liquid..i am not sure if it is harmful to my lens though
