Rainbow

Hey all

This is my first post in here and I'm still learning the tricks of photography with a DSLR.

I'm using a Nikon D60, manual settings.

I would like the following areas to be critiqued on:

• Composition - I wanted the kids to be cropped out of the photo, but I thought that the picture would end up being a lil too tight
• Photography technics - I actually forgot what settings I used for this shot but this was shot using manual settings

I just wanted to capture the moment of this rainbow which was breaking through the dusk. It was taken at 7.15pm and I thought it was a rare sight to see a rainbow during that time of day. Actually, I could see the whole bend of the rainbow from where I was standing, but too bad, I had a standard kit lens (18-55mm VR) to make do with so I couldn't get the whole bend of the rainbow.

I personally think that the rainbow could manage to be the main centre of attention despite the orange sky, where the sun is almost setting. I love how the colours of sky blend in with the rainbow, but not making the rainbow disappear. If you noticed, I felt that the leaves at the right hand corner nicely framed the photo.

It was orangy alright, I'd witnessed this rainbow too, actually it was a double rainbow phenomena, but the trees and other things still remains natural and normal, not in this case.

It looks more like taken with an orange filter. Pls view the other post...Rainbow at Clementi.

the picture looks too orange!
thus resulting in the colours of the rainbow not being able to be seen clearly!

haha so far i haven't seen a good rainbow picture yet! i wonder how to get a good one thou! cos i'am a newbie too! =)

too orange-y due to the orange clouds i presume?
i had a rainbow shot past few days but it turns out orange like the way u have it.

Just need to do auto adjustment and the colours will go back to normal.

C&C about your shot
you should try including the kids in the photo. or maybe get them to pose? or tell them GET OUT OF THE WAY! hahahahaha
other than that, nicely taken. Just take note of distractions. framing is good too.
and i seen may people using kit lens shoot better shots than pro users. so dont get discourage by that.

way too orangy- what did u set ur white balance to?

sometimes when rainbow not clear, can increase saturation too

Ok, I do know that pic 1 have nice orange.... But.... the orange makes the subject wrong, The rainbow is not a rainbow anymore, it's a orange line. I edited it in photoshop and try to bring it back to become a rainbow

I'd cut the foreground people out. Too many subjects vying for attention.

orange or not, it does not matter to me, because the tree peeking in from the edge, the people peeking in from the edge, the general messy feeling of the photo..

the composition is not up to par. when that is the case, then nothing is going to help much.

I agree , I dont quite like all the compositions you have presented thus far.
Secondly, your photos seemed so noisy or its just the compressions? Too dark mostly.

Looks like a wrong choice of White Ballance selected (or the auto is not good at it) too much orange.

The people spoil the image as does the leaves in top right.

If you had hopped the fence and run over to the waters edge you may have had a better shot, except for the WB.

Lots to learn, but I am wondering why do you remove the exif data as accessing the data allows us to understand the shooting of the photo better, thus can give more tips on how to set the setting for the shot better. Framing and other stuff wise can be guided by watching the photo, but camera setting can see exif data still better

hi, initially I thought it's an orange filter too, when I first look at it.

Think it would be a better shot if:

- top right coconut leaves gone
- 2 kids + 1 tiny kid on the far left gone
- lamp post gone
- tiny sparkles of ships faraway gone

don't know much technical aspects, but somehow I find the nearby trees/leaves darker/harsher compared to those faraway ones (which are softer and more soothing, and matches the rainbow well). Not sure if that's normal when comes to such angles.

But it's still nice to see such a big rainbow, good luck on your next shot

Hi wootsk,

It is posible to remove the Exif data on purpose if you are worried that you were lame and didn't want anybody to know you used auto ( there is nothing wrong with auto mode, but some people think it denotes the size of their di*k if they use it) :bsmilie:

The other thing that sometimes strips the Exif data away is by post processing.

For example; modifying a photo with programs such as Photoshop (simply sharpening a photo) and saving the jpeg can remove the exif info.

Oh by the way, a program to either remove Exif info .... or to alter it ....(If you have a small di*k) would be something like Opanda Professional

hhmm, kinda true, abit distracting with d kiddos ard, however may contemplate if self titled - chasing the rainbow (albeit gotta crop the white shirted kid on the left corner of pic)... juz my 2 cents, niwae im new here, my first ever gaol or i mean post of the season.. cheers to all...
