Hi,

Enjoy all the wonderful photos of beautiful creatures and flowers here. So I bought a Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro lens. Then, when someone advertised a Canon 250D, 58mm close up lens, I also bought it. Now, I am not sure whether I have the correct combination of lenses to pursue this interesting hobby. Therefore, I need some guidance. Please help to direct me on what else I may require. Many thanks.

The 250D close up lens when used on your canon 100f2.8 macro lens is practically useless since you will not get any additional meaningful magnification. The min focusing distance of your 100 macro lens is already less than 30cm so fitting the 250D which makes the focusing distance a fixed 25cm is in my opinion a waste of money.

I would say that the 100 macro lens is already sufficient in itself to take great macro pics. If you need or want additional magnification, I would suggest getting either a +10 macro filter, the Raynox DCR250 which is a +8 close up filter, some extension tubes or the 2X teleconverter.

Hi teebs,

Thank you for your advice. So my 250D, 58mm is useless unless I can use it on other lenses.

Yes, you need to use it on lenses that have min focusing distances of greater than 25cm in order to have any magnification of the subject.

The 250D is basically a +4 close up filter which means it can be used on the EF-S55-250 lens (also 58mm filter thread). I actually use a +4 close up filter on my 55-250 lens occasionally for macro shots. But typical usage is from 150mm onwards. :)

But take note that with the 250D's 58mm filter thread, you should be using it on lenses with 58mm threads or less. Using it on any lens with larger than 58mm filter threads will cause vignetting in your images.

Hi teebs,

In your opinion, which will be a better set-up....

1. Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro USM or
2. Canon EF 100mm f/2 USM with Canon 250D

I am stuck with the 100mm macro and 250D that do not match and can sell either one and be back to square one in terms of cost and usage.

Thanks,

Anthony Lee

The 100mm macro f2.8 is as good a lens for most macro shoots as any other. Have a look at the flickr group to see what people are getting using this lens: http://www.flickr.com/groups/canon100mm/

The EF100f2.8 Macro will be a better setup. A +10 close up filter or the Raynox DCR250 will be able to complement this setup if you need higher magnification. :)

My set up for macro is:

1) Canon S3 IS + DCR250
2) 40D + Tamron 90 (+ DCR250 or +10 macro filter)
3) 40D + 55-250 + (+4 close up or +10 macro filter or DCR250)

Hi budak and teebs,

Many thanks for your help. Shall keep the 100mm f/2.8 macro and maybe go for some extension tubes or the DCR250.

Cheers,

DCR250 will be preferable since it does not cause any loss in light. :)

how much is the DCR 250? any rough figure?
