for its price, i rather get a 2nd hand dslr + an 18-200 lens and be done with it plus if need something smaller, maybe those $99~$199 PnS cameras.

Manual gives you flexibility for creativity but in just about all cases, most use either P, Tv, A modes. Nice pictures depends on how well you know your camera.

IXUS series do not have full manual settings. You need to get either the Powershot A, S, SX or G series to have full manual modes though the Powershot A1000, A2000, E1 do not have full manual controls either. I think only the A590 has full manual controls in the current A series.

Correct me if I am wrong but I don't think it is easy to get a 2nd hand dslr (12MP) + an 18-200 (IS) lens under S$479 (current selling price of the F200EXR). Of coz it is also like comparing apple & orange... :bsmilie:

The main "selling point" of the F200EXR is it's new "Super CCD EXR" sensor, from reviews it is quite good for a PnS camera. Having a manual mode does not make your photo better, it just give you more control over your setting.

I have been using the F100fd for about a year and very happy with it. Last week I gave it to my father, so I am now in the market for a new compact.

I believe the F200EXR should be at least as good as, if not better than, the F100fd. With the wide dynamic range sensor it will open up more creative opportunities for the photographer.

Having said that, I also came across the reviews and sample photos of the Panasonic LX3, and have to say I am really impressed also.

The LX3 has managed to gather a large fan group, and the camera seems to be out of stock everywhere. Check out the pictures in the Panasonic subforum. Having seen F100fd pictures for the past months I have to say the LX3 compares very well, and with the 24mm equiv wide angle f2.0 lens plus 16:9 format I am really attracted by this camera.

Canon A series is the really budget series of Canon so can't really expect too much from these cameras. That said, I have used 2 of their older A series before and I can say that they are value for money.

But on a side note, I found that the IXUS 980IS DOES have M control. It is the first IXUS to offer full manual control over aperture and shutter speed according to the online brochure I saw on the canon website.

And according to its specifications, it uses a 1/1.7" CCD which is practically the same as the f200exr. Price wise, I think it should be ard $600. Saw a second hand one selling at $550 at Cash Converter JE.

thk! but i really don't have the budget, 400+ really the max and my mum actually not very happy really. In fact 400+ is i save for many months, i go library borrow a lot of book to read on photography, so i know dslr is good, but really out of my reach. :cry:

yup, size limited to compact, no choice. i know manual mode dont alway give good photo, and have no intention to buy the "best" camera; justtrying to learn more from manual control.

yup, lx3 is good, i like the multi exposure option, too bad too exp for me.

I had also used the older A series during my first trip to Munich... It is a "convenient" PnS as I don't need to worry about batteries... but the ASPM control & IQ are not that fantastic... :think:

oh thk, maybe can search for cheaper ixus 980 at second hand shop like cash converter. ixus 980 offer manual focus too, apart from control over aperture and shutter speed,
but i think its sensor size is smaller becos its megapixel is higher.

i did some search, nikon s710 also offer manual control, and the price range in well within 400+, i think panasonic fx520 also. i'm considering nikon s710.
