Soo lets just say that my dad didn't really like (read: hated) his samsung phone for the past 2 years. Yeah, the old Z240 one that they had going on as a S$0 phone with re-contracting the M1 plan.

Anyway, we're now trying to find a good phone. The new management at his company is really into the text-messaging discussions and instructions kinda thing, so he's wrecking his brains with typing on his samsung.

The phone features needed are:

  1. Easy Text-messaging (probably via a qwerty keypad)
  2. Not touch-screen type
  3. Good battery life (should last at least 2 days with periodic SMSing)
  4. Allows hands-free talking (when driving)
  5. Has a (half) decent camera in case he needs to shoot photos of important business stuff.
  6. Should not cost a bomb (after saving some bucks by re-contracting with M1, shouldn't cost more than S$400)
I heard that many people are going the blackberry way, and I have no idea why. Nokia's E71 also seems like a good idea..

Any comments and suggestions will be appreciated =)

Cheers,
Zexun

Haha, I did research on that, and it seems like the E63 also looks good.

As for BlackBerry phones, why? blackberry messenger? I heard it allows free phone-to-phone instant messaging.

yea when the bill come, it costs a bomb.

Nokia E71 or E61i

if ur tat have big fingers than go for Nokia E61i like me, have big fingers .

E63 lacks certain features. Do a comparison b4 buying. For me the HSDPA and gps were key functionalities. I use the HSDPA functionality to check email when i dun have access to a computer.

Besides the above, IMHO, you should also consider the professional image. Blackberry is the way to go for professional image (assuming the company pays for the phone bill). You get push email, a decent camera (with flash), stable platform, handsfree calls, a great QWERTY keypad and most its mostly used by executives.

Cheers.

Blackberry is a nice phone to have. Less prone to hang, more droppable (if there is such a word), and in terms of business image, it is not important. Reliability and long battery life is key. As for bill size, it can be trimmed. If its a leisure trip, just off the data to save the a hundred dollars or so.

They're into it, because if you're part of an organisation, the org will pay all your phone charges.

a blackberry is not every employee''s fancy. He/she is being forced fed with email and cannot avoid any impt request/news even if travelling or on mc or have an off day on sunday at church.

The push mail is a love/hate thing. The top guy loves it as he can blast email even when he is having a blast in the loo. And the receipients of these emails are having sheet falling on them 24/7 where there is no real off day to really cut off from work. (24/7 as some companies has usa/europe counterparts).

Pfffft. "Image"

I use a SonyEriccson X1 which also has push mail, blah blah, and I know several "executives" throwing their blackberries away to switch to an HTC Touch HD, X1 and the E71.

I think the E71 will suit him quite well. I'm using it right now, $398 with a normal 2 yrs plan.
Pretty slick & classy design. Light weight, loud speaker, good batt life & fast texting.
Comes with leather pouch & 2GB MicroSD.

Btw, if your dad intend to get this.
During the purchase.
Try the camera, turn off the flash on menu.
Snap a pic.
See if the camera is still fire the flash.

Cos after my sister & I bought the phones.
Then we realise that the flash is 'ALWAYS ON'. LoLx

HTC does some pretty wonderful phones. Used to own the HTC touch. But sold it off once the warranty expired.... Dun want to find myself faced with the huge repair bill when it ever breaks down:bsmilie: The touch screen alone cost $170 to change.....

I'm using a 2nd hand samsung i780 now. Great phone too.... Actually it have all that your dad wants.... Qwerty, decent camera, half touch screen(which u can choose not to use), and even a mouse pad.... Yes, i use a cursor to navigate my phone:bsmilie:

But, well, forget abt this samsung... It is almost out of production now with no replacement model... I think your dad most probably have got some samsung phobia now;p

Go for HTC or blackberry. You wouldn't go wrong.... Alternatively, nokia's arte series, nice & elegant(but thats out of budget)....

HTC IMHO, have got pretty decent battery life... My HTC touch's battery capacity is way above the normal phones in the market.... I typically can max out the battery in abt half a week. But do bear in mind, i'm no phone addict.... I only text, call and erm view documents in my phone.

all the BB does not have any decent cameras.. at most for you to take some snap shots and tt's it, battery life wise any of the phones that have 3g for the BB usually dont last very long except the 8700 series.. look at the bold or curve which is quite nice.. usually you get BB coz you want the mails to come in 24*7 and if the company does have a BES server. if not need to use BIS service for those free web mails with POP service available.

for the e71.. it really look like a nice phone.. takes decent pictures.. haven play much with it yet. but more or less it is very user friendly as this is what nokia phones are all about.

any of the above 2 you would need to get a data plan else there is no point getting the above 2 type of phones for their functions is all about connections.. :)

Ah okay. Many votes for the E71 which seems like the best package for price, some features missing from E71 in the E63, but for cheaper (dad might not need or want email on the go, for example), doesn't need GPS. Thumbs-ups for blackberries, but only if the entire company changes their phones to use BBs.

E71 is S$398, E63 is like, S$198 or something? Blackberries are S$498 and above iirc.

I read online that the E63's battery > E71's battery life, and the E71 was very good already.

my E71 battery can last 1 week. i only receive 1-2 calls a day, sms around 20 a day and seldom use other functions other than GPS

Wow, that's impressive. I didn't know about it haha, haven't read many reviews yet. Thanks for the headsup.

can some one recommend a 3.5 G handset that comes without camera?
Going to reservist and want to surf nice sites to kill off time.
