Seriously, do you fall in love with the camera or with the result? :bheart:

I'm thinking of whether to upgrade to DSLR..or stay with my compact camera.
Do you have $$$$?
How are you able to resist BBB virus?

DSLR can make you take worse picture than compact you know.
What unique picture you want to do with compact camera?
Some compact camera can be hidden and can take seriously unique picture (esp candid) which no DSLR can do :bsmilie:
plus they have silent option which DSLR does not have.

If i'm gonna go to dslr, i'm tinking of either Sony A350 or Canon 450D...

why you rule out other brand? :nono: tsk tsk tsk ...

Hw do i go abt capturing unique pictures with compact camera??

Whether DSLR or PnS... Press the shutter release button. I've seen fantastic pictures taken with mobile phone cams too.

Too often people don't know that it is the person behind the camera that is most important..... :)

Yeah, the photo depends on the person holding the camera.....

Go sign up at PSS or Knowledgebowl or somewhere for a course to understand more about photography. Decide whether you wanna invest in more hardware after that after you've figured out whether there's passion in photography.

The course is definitely cheaper than the DSLR.....

you can get good pictures with a compact if you know what you're doing...

read up a little on composition tips, maybe some basic photo editing, playing with levels, white balance etc etc

then consider getting a dslr...
it pains me nowadays to see kids with their little 1000d's and 18-55's taking pictures on auto thinking anything will look good because they have a "wah lao darn big camera"

:)

1st --Like wat aryanto sai, ask urself if u like the camera or the result.. dun make an impulse decision..

2nd --both have their own strenghts and weakness..DSLR u can use for all kinds of photography (by using the interchangable lens), compact only short range and the zoom range depends on the camera..

3rd -- Nvr ever restrict ur self to a few brands.. look at all the brands before deciding..

4th-- Can ur wallet support the dslr? coz dslr is at least 2x exp than compact cameras, anywhere from $600 all the way to a few thousand dollars.. not forgetting the lens too.. it also costs money..:)

But still, understand more about photography first before making a decision.. so that u wont regret when u make the decision..:D

last point -- heavy or light? small or big? cheap or exp? what do u really want?;)

I started with compact, $300
My latest rig (full - body, lenses, flash, filters, drybox) .. I spend like more than $6000.
2x as expensive? make it 20x
my resistance with BBB virus not so strong

Stay with your Compact rather than getting a Dslr, unless you're familliar with Photography. It's the man behind a camera that produces good results and not the camera, basically.

Let me shared my experience.

I had been wanted to buy a DSLR, but had been holding that back for years.

I bought my DSLR 2years ago, because I was having some problem with my compact camera just few days before I flew off for vacation.

I never looked back since. Having a DSLR, looking through the viewfinder gave me a new perspective which my compact camera had not given me. Now, I am holding back my BBB virus to get new lens.

But a few months later, I bought another compact camera. The reason is I can't carry my DSLR to everywhere I go. It is too big and heavy.

I hope my experience will help you in your decision.

Agree with brother Loonz...

DSLR no doubt will give you better quality of the images, however, how nice the pictures turn out will depend how you compose it.

You will still need to have a compact camera as backup or travelling without hassle.

See my post at Fuji thread for comparison between compact and DSLR.

If you're talking about image quality, dslrs tend to produce better quality pictures. But that does not mean the picture is good.

Taking a good picture is a skill within the photographer and not camera-dependent.

Having compact can be good, if you intend to travel light and easy to store.

only upgrade when your current equipment is holding you back

if not that only means that you have not made full use of your current equipment yet

Own all three, digital camera, DSLR and Video cam.
But, plan your budget, with DSLR, you will need to maintain it well. Not like digital camera where you can just put here and there. And the lens are kinda bigger than digital cam. If you thinking of A350, why not and canon 450D also suit it and you may try nikon D60, those starter kits might give you the feel about DSLR. So play with what you have 1st and save enough money. Unless you've work and earn 3k per mth, then go ahead and have a feel on DSLR. ;)

stretch your compact to the limit first.

i was using a canon Powershot A95, and now the same Canon model as you. i dare say i got some pretty decent pics with my canon compacts. to me, the only shortcoming with my compact is when i want to take night shots.

during the day, when there is sufficient light, you could get pretty good pictures with compacts. and the biggest advantage of compact is that the user would have so much freedom in trying out different angles. for example, i could hold up the compact above my head, look at the LCD composition, and still take a nice pic. you can't do that with a DSLR.

and like others said, it is the person behind the camera that counts.

;)

lol, really is 20x.. I started out with film, SLR film, then to compact, then to cheap dslr, then to the 30d.. spent around 5k till now, i think?

hahah.. i think my BBB virus resistance very high.. coz i now havent bought any lens other than 50mm.. now finding mount adapter for the various lens i have from my SLR film cameras.. And besides, with DSLR, u can get mount adapters and use the lens from ur SLRs.. which is quite an advantage..:D

Like B-setting said, use the compact to its limits, then if u find that its really limiting u, get a camera that suits u, whether it will be compact or DSLR..

Coz anybody who sees what i started with, will guess why i upgrade and upgrade, and now to my current 30D.. ;)

definitely DSLR lor...

U can do alot more using DSLR...

best part of it is BBB!:devil:

Buying a DSLR is buying a camera system. as long your budget can support, okay-lah.
