I very new at this

Hi all, I am very new to photography, So I am looking for all the help I can get.
First I have been studing for a while now, and go out on shoots with my friends that are photographers, so they have taught me some..
I need to buy a camera, I dont want to go very basic, because I am wanted to work at this full time, I am a nurse, but would like to break into photography at least part time..
So if anyone could tell me what type of camera, I do like canon, just because I can hold it better in my hand..
But what ever..I'm open, also if anyone has any cameras for sale that wont break me please let me know, as i get better i except to be paying a lot more and I'm looking forward to it..
I have been an artist since grade 5 I have 2 pieces of my work in a gallery here in Vancouver..

well done. why not you check it out with your friends over there. since they are photographers i'm sure they can advice you much better than anyone of us here. i'm not shunting you here but i believe your friends know you best. meanwhile go to shops to try out the cameras and have a feel of them.

OK, at least the brand is something you have chosen. You didn't mention what sort of photography you intend to get into. That could sometimes determine, or help direct you to a better choice. Landscape photography places different demands on equipment than say sports or fashion.

In lieu of actually spending extensive time with different bodies, try researching the in-depth reviews from dpreview and luminous landscape. Also, check out forum discussions at places like fred miranda forums and POTN (photography on the net, a Canon forum that also welcomes other brand users).

what you need is find out what you intend your system to be able to do and equipment you may get in future and then next is a good rental shop. If you find DSLR too tedious then a simpler PnS may be the one for you?

First establish a budget

As you prefer Canon check out their many SLR's and see what fits you, they have SLR's from Canadian $500 to $5000
Also check out their lenses, but also check out Nikon, I use Nikons and am more familiar with them

Decide if you would stay with the DX format or move up to the FX format eventually, this will help you decide what type of lenses to buy
When I first got into photography there was no such thing as a DX format so my collection of lenses over the years have all been FX but they work well on my two DX SLRs

The purchase of the camera and first lens is just the initial expense, now you will have to have a decent computer and software to process your images and a photo quality printer.

Try and buy the same brand as your friends use so you can learn from them and also use their equipment before you decide to buy more lenses.

Have fun, Vancouver is such a pretty city to shoot in and so is Victoria....
