If i'm interested in things like Food and Product photography, what kind of lens should i be looking at? Macro?

Really depends on what you are shooting. If the object is too large, the macro lens might not be able to frame it fully.
 

extension tubes...

your kit lens.. or macro only if you want to shoot very close ups..

lighting and a creative mind is more important for product photography..
It will be good if both of you can post the replies to TS 2 years and seven months earlier. :)

how come nobody mentioned the TSE lenses?

cos 2 years ago, not much ppl buy TSEs... FF too expensive...

besides, Nikon only have 1 TSE on their catalog, the 35mm one is obsolete... left with the trinity TSE from Canon... the other brands all dun have TSEs.
 

I use both 25mm zuiko f2.8, or 30mm sigma f1.4 (if you need thin DOF)

there are 4 of them here...

Nikon Special Purpose lenses
 

any lens even kit is pretty much useable with proper technique...its learning how to use light to make the food very appetising thats difficult to pick up.
