There is 1 rule that is very simple in every contest. That is: if your are happy with the rules, obey the rules, if not.... don't join the contest.

20: If required by STB, you shall at no expense to STB provide a high quality copy of the photograph submitted with your entry or render such reasonable assistance as STB may require to use or implement your entry for the purposes contemplated in this Agreement.

this, after you fail to win anything, and couldn't care less. but wait, you surrendered your IP right in 18, so STB owns YOUR photo. so here comes rule 20, and you may not be credited.

then again, i have some commercially worthless photos (wait. all my photos are like that) which are not suitable for stock. what the heck

too bad that i don't have a high quality version. see what they say. not as if they are likely to use it.

I e-mailed STB and asked them to clarify clause 18. I asked if it means we lose all rights or that STB have the rights to use the image but we still own the rights.

This is the reply: "You do not lose the rights of your photos. Once submitted, STB will have all rights to use it in whatever manner. However, you still own the rights to your images and can use them for your own purposes. Hope this clarifies."

Then... second e-mail comes and it says:
"I forgot to mention that you can only use the images that are submitted for non-commercial usage."

Sheesh! So kiasu they are!

This is not just about "no shiok don't take part" but it shows how much - or rather, how little - value an organisation like STB places on our intellectual property.

Imagine, for the chance to win up to few million dollars in Toto, Singapore Pools only ask that we give up 50 cents. But here, for the chance to win a $2999 camera, we are being asked to give up all commercial rights to our images.

It means our intellectual property is worth far less than 50 cents. And this is totally out of line with the garmen's declared intention to promote and respect intellectual property.

When I mentioned this to my friend, his reaction was... Tell them, when actresses or models audition for movie roles, it is very common practice for producers and directors to demand sex - without any guarantee that they will get the role. If you want a chance, have sex first. This is an open secret. Is the STB trying to practise this?

LOL! I thought my friend's analogy was really wild, but much truth in it.

More seriously, I don't think this is the intention of STB and the condition was probably put there by some kiasu legal officer. I gave them my feedback and the latest reply was that they will reconsider the matter and "sort this out".

i only uploaded images i deem to be worthless, commercially.

i just started venturing into stock. haven't made anything for over 2 mths (got minimum sum for payout and i'm very far from it). but i only submitted low res pix (then again, if i get lucky, i don't have high res version), or pix that i might require 8 model releases for but can't be bothered.

That is really quite a low-down/low-ball method to cut-costs on their end.

This could easily be a 10-20 grand project for a photographer/a small group of photographers.

WOAHAHAHA. :bsmilie::bsmilie: Bro, this IS singapore bro. That's why so many of us so tired of these kinda stupid rules that we will earn enough and retire in MALAYSIA, CHINA OR INDONESIA. In Indonesia, u not happy can DEMO, in Singapore u DEMO u kena lockup and thrown in some underground dundgeon in some island somewhere, maybe pedra banca...

In Msia & Indonesia, u can shoot anyting u want and still own the IP, can't say the same for China though... Spore has a lot to learn about moving with the times.

Even though we are living in Singapore, still that does not mean we can give up our copyright in exchange for some 'hope' and 'dream' to win a S$2,999 camera. In fact, I thought a modern world-class nation like ours would respect intellectual property rights more than some of our neighbors. That is why you seldom see pirated DVDs, music CDs or software disks on sale here nowadays. Simply because we claimed to adhere and practice intellectual property laws.

The terms and conditions stated in this photo contest is simply unacceptable even in our local context. Don't be lured into their 'baits' and turn ourselves into pro bono stock photographers for them.
