Canon 450D dilemma

Hi. i'm going to get my first DSLR Canon 450D but dun know which kit lens to choose..
Should I get

18mm-55mm kit lens $1180

or 18mm-55mm kit lens & 55mm-250mm lens $1470

or kit lens 18mm-200mm $1800

I wanted the 18-200mm but read on review that not very good.. Anyone using the 18-200 len? Dun wan to regrad buying it.. Or any other suggestion to start off? like get body n a Tamron 17-50mm lens?

It will depend on what you will be shooting. As reviewed, the 18-200, due to it's longer range in focal length, there tends to be some lost of quality. If you really need the WA to Tele range, then I think the twin lens package is good. 18-55 & 55-250, basically all range cover for a start.

The tamron 17-50 is a good and fast lens but preferences is still up to you.

It really depends on your preference and budget.
More money = more options.

Also the range that you are comfortable with using.

If you are fine with 18-55, and have money to spend, then spend it on the tamrom which is sharper.

Alternatively, the money can be spent on the 55-250mm range.

I dont recommend the 18-200mm because the kit II gives more versatility and is cheaper, unless weight is really an issue.

Save up the $$$, and consider spending on other accessories like a remote, tripod, lenspen, flash unit, etc which opens up more options for your photography.

IQ is not tt big a limiting factor as opposed to flash or a tripod, because as long as ur photo composition is fine you can take beautiful photos =)

If you are not sure about a lens, best is to try it out for yourself (either at the shop or a short 1-2 day rental).

cos u see.. i'm interested in macro N landcape/nature pic Wide angle. also planning to train up my shooting skills so i can be ready for my sis wedding in the future? so i should just get 18-55 kit? or 17-50? btw how often do u guys use tele lens?

ok, u probably dont need a tele then. get 18-55 and save up for 10-22.

Seems like you got the spending power but do not rush into buying unless you really need them.

been saving up for the start. really interested in photograghy.Actually going for classes soon lol.. Dun wan to waste money selling off after regret that i brought the wrong one.. so wan to make sure i know what i wan to shoot n get that lens..

You can start by buying the kit 1st. Do more research then buy is still not too late than to buy already then regret later, it will be too late.

Like previous post had stated, other than lenses, accessories are needed too. Filters, Remotes, Bags, Memory Cards etc...

Yup from the mouth of another DSLR beginner, get the 18-55 Kit first and then shoot.

I had the same problem contemplating if I should bundle the 55-250 together, but got dissuaded by reading some of the posts here. They pointed out that anyone new should perhaps just take the 18-55 and snap a few shots first to get the feel of it and know what kinda shots I would want to take in the future. And its true, my 55-250 would have become a white elephant as I would rather have just one lense to 'try things out' first.

This is probably one of the most sort after question in this forum. I think i may have even asked this myself when i started.

I think in my case, there was a lot of advise to ditch all the kit lens. of course everyone felt that its better to go for a better lens rather than the kit lens. Finally i bought the kit lens but i have since sold it and upgraded.

At the point of purchase, i was not sure if i really wanted to spend so much knowing so little. Now after such a while, i have grown to realize they are right and that is why i upgraded. But seriously, would i have known if i have not tried a kit lens first and understand that the good ones can really give better quality? Would i have known my preference and what i need first since i was so new to it?

I really appreciated the fact that i bought the kit lens or it would not have helped me decide in my future investment because i could have jumped in and bought some expensive lens only to realize its not for what i am shooting. But its me, i like to experience things before i know what is really good for me.

Another way to do this is, you may want to consider getting the body only and buy the 18-55mm used. Then when you really decide what you need, you can sell it off without losing too much $?
