Is 55-200mm f/4-5.6G fast enough to capture indoor performance?

considering tis lens, its a AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor lens. for taking dance/fashion performance without external flash.

I think it would be quite challenging with the f/4-5.6G. I think if you are standing quite a distance away then the Af-S 70-200mm f/2.8 would be a better choice.

Hi Baggiolee,
I am an owner of 55-200mm lens. It is an impressive, light and portable piece of equipment. Solid value for money. I took some memorable Thaipusam pictures with this gem recently. No regrets. I will consider the 70-200mm only if I upgrade to a full frame camera. Cheers.

I owned the lens before... Got to depend on the lightings of the venue.
If the venue is bright, then I dun see a prob, if not, u may need to push up ya ISO.
Tat's from my newbie experience, hopefully it helps.
But still I find that the lens seems to hunt quite alot (during indoor).

** Now I'm trying out the Sigma 70 - 200 f2.8... So far so good... Still learning... **

thx! have u taken any indoor performance shoot with tis lens? pics sharp?

indoor pics are good, provided the light is good enough.
if it's too dim, then shutter speed will be too slow (even at the largest apperture f3.5-5.6) and there will be motion blurr.
the way i overcame this problem was to use a flash

Maybe you can classify the following pics (all shot with 55-200mm lens) as indoors event shoot? Here you go.

wow nice pics taken!

but wat i worry is will there be motion blur if the subject (indoor with moderate lightings) is moving vigorously. can its fastest settings on the lens be able to counter it?

yes, it does. f/4 cannot really capture the actions , so some picture with motion may be blurred... but yeah, it can capture indoor with no problem.

your term "indoor performance" is indeed too vague..

depending on lighting conditions.. if you are going without flash even fast lens like f/2.8s might even not be enough to "freeze" action unless you boost ISO..

but if you are intending to "capture" action.. (note the difference) then i guess it should suffice..

If you're talking about AF acquisition, this lens is not fast enough. Used to have this lens before, hunts quite abit in low lighting (even more so in lower end bodies)...even so, unless the subject doesn't move much, the acquisition speed is too slow to capture.
