Assignment: What can we do to change the world?

-----------------------------------(Imagine)----------------------------------
Take for example a community of indegeniuos people in say an Island XXX. These people live really side-by side with nature. So called "uncivilised" maybe because they do not wear any clothes, or pee in the bushes and have long unshaved beard and body hairs. Eating from plates carved from wood and eating off banana leaves. Even if they live like this through generations, I guess the world would still be as it was, natural and untouched (maybe).

One fine day, comes Mr Colonisation, land on this island. He saw these indegenious people and then thought of "What can we do to change the world(this Island)?". He made some plans, made rules and decided that he's going to the following:
- chop off the large granite hill of this island, and ship the stones back to his original country.
- Give these Indegenious people clothes to cover themselves.
- Build a resort on this Island and take out these indegenious people from their fishermans life and make them work in the resort.
- make a small airport so that holiday go'ers could access the island and transportation of logistics to sustain the new activities of the island.

All these went well as planned. Yes, this Mr Colonisation did avery great job!! He Changed the world(island)?. BUT, not long down the years, this Island XXX start to get problems such as:
- pollution related problems where waste management was not cared for
- fishing quality drops and people had to resort to Imported food.
- The once dense jungle full of natural source of herbs and natural remedies is now gone for the sake of the new airport.
- River mouth full of floating plastic mineral water bottles...

Not long...the Island had to turn itself into a manufacturing place with cheap labour as the tourist spots lost its shine.....They had to make a port to allow container ships to go alongside. Not long, they lost thier dependency on their local fising industry and had to import processed food from neighbouring countries. This island has transformed to a once natural and beautiful island.....to a busy little polluted island...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

:bsmilie:
So if you were a local, would you choose to live on your natural, untouched island, or accept mr colonization and the technological advances and polution he brings?

In 1989, a Canadian girl called Severn Cullis-Suzuki started an Environmental Children's Organization (ECO), to learn and teach other kids about the environment.

In 1992, the kids (aka ECO) raised enough money to represent their organisation at the UN's Earth Summit. Their aim was to remind the decision-makers of who their actions or inactions would ultimately affect. Severn is 12 years old and speaks to the UN.

Hmm maybe we have to be very young or retired to want to do anything???

ReallY? You think that is what we need youth or someone into retirement to motivate others to take up the plight?

Okay... google what happen after that in 1989 and in 1992 to see after all the hoopla..what did the UN and ECO do...was anything done or achieved and carried on till today by those young ladies and are they still doing anything or has it all stopped after archiving fame and yes...maybe fortune.

Every now and again there will be stories and that is just it...stories. And usually with a hidden agenda. The ones that really does it are mostly quietly in their own way doing something about and not there for the publicity and in fact are usually shy about it. Thus far majority I see that I notice...the louder they get to publish their so call green cause...the more it is about money and then they disappear with most of it later on. I don't really believe is all this hippy love and soft hand approach to cleaning up our act to help make planet earth more livable.

I think we need law and ways to enforce it. The biggest populated of the world are not so much your everyday men and women. It is the corporations who with one signing of a contract can dump enough toxic material into the ground to dispose of it and save billions of dollars for their pocket. The copany that taint the milk in China....was it the workers or the decision of just a handful of the company owners who decided? Time for preaching it over in my view. Time to act and act with more severity against the ones with the means to bring about that abuse...but really is that a possibility? Majority are the main backers of politicians and yes...even the UN or whatever organisation...so how will you ever kill of the main causes.

All you and I can do it try to make that change among the minority. Which I am not saying is not a good thing but really...maybe it makes us feel good about ourselves but really....we don't kill of the main root, all this effort we are putting here and all the theories is simply just talk as I said. these day...going green is just another way for companies to sell you the product more dearer and they use Green as a marketing tool to pressure you into buying it if not...you are not green. But if you do your homework and research deeper and not just read a magazine about it you find there are alot of so called GREEN products that are really not even GREEN!. And we know 90% of people will not read or search that's for sure. So the cycle continues. I still hope it will not be too late for change to really come but I am not holding my breath....not even for Obama to make that change. If mother nature have to take drastic action to prevent fro hurting her further, I say more power to her. Reminds me of that wonderful movie by M. Night Shyamalan called "The Happening" last year.

When we're young or old we have time on our hands. Somewhere in between the whole rigmarole of job, marriage, children, home, striving for a better life keeps us busy.

IMO:
Broadly speaking: as children we are idealistic, as we "grow up" we get knocked about and become more cynical.......and then when we're on our way out we want to tut tut at the way the world is becoming!!!

Yes they are still active. If they get paid for what they are passionate about - good for them. They need something to put into their rice bowl and a roof over their head. Very few "activists" do this for fame and fortune. They do it for what they believe in.

There is a saying "many hands make light work". One person cannot carry the burden of the world's problems nor can one country. And so think tanks are created to harness the power of multiple minds and cultures.

Doing web searches will only tell you a part of the story. It will not tell you the whole story. If you want to know the effects the ECO has made on other kids, communities and cultures then you got a lot more research to do and being there than just a sole reliance on the web. As you say there are people who are influenced and will do what they can without saying who or what influenced them.

Every now and again there will be stories and that is just it...stories. And usually with a hidden agenda. The ones that really does it are mostly quietly in their own way doing something about and not there for the publicity and in fact are usually shy about it. Uncle Sam am confused here. If their aim is to raise the profile of what they do in order to establish a precedent for others to follow and if at the same time they raise funds to support the work they do - fantastic! Money is used to barter at all levels. In some communities we can get away we swapping out services but in the majority of cases suppliers want cash and nothing else.

Am sure there are unethical people who do disappear with funds but these are not just limited to the "green movement" but also to charities, religion, corporations....in all walks of life. Unfortunately there are unscrupulous people in our society that will take advantage of us. But we build up a database of people we trust until that trust is broken.

Who are the people making legislation? Some work for themselves and some work for the people. In western societies there is another saying "If you don't speak out then you will not be heard." The opportunities for speaking out are everywhere in order to influence policy makers. Who knows what effect a 12 year old had on the leaders that were there? Would they admit a 12 year old helped them form a legislation?

All you and I can do it try to make that change among the minority.

Yes - Sales and word of mouth!

Yes there are unethical companies but we can only hope that we have researched enough to know who is good and then word of mouth to everyone else :D

Maybe you could be right.... but I am not holding my breath on this one. Oh you saw the lastest news...now we have scientists saying it is too late. We have passed the time we could make a dramatic change to save the world from global warming. Cute huh? heheh....

Don't hold your breathe or you'll pass out.....and all your fans will miss yr presence ;)

Uncle Sam taught me:

Rule 1: Never believe the first thing you see

Rule 2: Do an internet search
They've been saying it since 2004. I've imagined it as a full sink and the water is overflowing. Even a dribble will cause the water to overflow. So do we think we are doomed to global warming? Think humans like fatality and death. We are always predicting the end of the world. Think it gives us hope for a time of renewal and regeneration. Maybe the recession will help this along :)

Rule 3: Be cynical
IMO: the scientists find it difficult to predict the processes involved in maintaining the earth. Look at the weather predictions. They can get close at times and in rare circumstances get it spot on but can only predict what is now and not the future.

Currently man is increasing the entropy of the system (our world being an isolated system), producing chaos to mother nature's order. The only way to even attempt to reverse our mess is to look at how we can co-exist with nature and even though it sounds hippy - put sustainability first.

The easiest for us to start with is to reduce our waste. Support the products that can be reused/recycled.

on this, i only remember one of those vaguely interesting public lectures somewhere in london that went something like this:

Take polar bears for example: yes, polar bears are going to have a hard time (with global warming) but what can we do? Again, we need to have a sense of proportion. Most people say we need to do the Kyoto Protocol even more, but if you look at what the Kyoto Protocol would do, it would save about one polar bear every year.

Now - I'm happy to save a polar bear but it doesn't look like the way to go forward. And again one of the things that blow my mind is that we talk about using trillions of public policy to save a polar bear, when we should realise that we shoot a thosuand every year.

Won't it be easier to just stop shooting them?

on this, i only remember one of those vaguely interesting public lectures somewhere in london that went something like this:

yalor yalor... before the so call may or may not happen global warming happens...hunters would have killed them all off.... maybe the last one will be taken by Sarah Palin.

Interesting. A power station in space. Can anyone, esp those advocating clean energies to save the earth, enlighten me about the motivation for the shift to clean energy? And the motivation for a space-based power station? And, if possible, the costs of all these? And how effective they are in "saving the earth"?

Perhaps (but am lazy) either doing some research at Nasa's website or the European Space Agency might give you the answers about costs.

In terms of effectiveness in saving the earth, who knows......but I'd like to try examplify this by looking at your home (or anyone's home).
- You buy products - and throw the wrappings away - someone else deals with your waste
- You purchase energy - someone else deals with the waste from the power plant

Let's now assume that no-one else deals with the rubbish you produce. You have to burn your own fire for cooking and light and all the rubbish you produce/bring into the house sits in your own house. If can burn your rubbish but that just creates more soot and some of those plastics you burn will release toxic gases.

Your house is the world. How would you like your house to be?

For me it's not just about clean energy but about living in harmony with the planet that I call home

:bsmilie::bsmilie: Very good. Dude, in other words, you're saying you have no idea about the costs and consequences of the move to clean energy, too lazy to find out, in spite of advocating it publicly.

Dude, "who knows"?? Lets be fair. Alot of climate predictions are based on research and computer simulations. The conclusions are unvalidated guesses, but educated guesses nonetheless. Which is the best we have. So alot of people do have an idea on the effectiveness of present actions aimed at "saving the earth."

Not interested in analogies, I don't live next to a toxic dump. But i've seen people who live next to rivers which are toxic dumps. Can you guess why they do this, and what their real problem is?

It is always a far away idea to be able
to live in prayer and constant contemplation.

However we may have to discover the power of
contemplation not only embraces awareness but
the act of looking forward to an event as about
to happen; expectation; the act of intending
or purposing - what way is better than through
illustration in a story telling manner?

The harder the storm hit,
the more beautiful the rainbow will be.

What if the story is inaccurate? What if the story hides truth and prevents awareness? A seductive oversimplification of events?

well, just enjoy the story loh... :bsmilie:

:bsmilie::bsmilie: Very good. Dude, in other words, you're saying you have no idea about the costs and consequences of the move to clean energy, too lazy to find out, in spite of advocating it publicly.

Dude your original question implies you were asking about costs of a theoretical space based power station and though there may be some estimated costs somewhere on the web, you would have found that out yourself. Your past responses have certainly shown you to be someone who can research and check out facts. So be proactive cos that is what this thread is about.

FYI: Someone sent me the video link and I was sharing it with you all about what potentially could happen with regards to "clean energy". I thought it was an interesting concept nothing more.

If you want to know what I, me, myself thinks about clean energy - then you would have looked on my website. I have already written a number of articles there.

It would be great if you shared your knowledge and for spin offs start a new thread such as for your repeated questions that have been asked in other threads:

"What do you think are the costs and consequences of not moving to clean energy?"
"What is global warming?"
"What is the big deal about carbon?"

IN that way you use the forum constructively to gather other people's thoughts about a single topic.

THIS thread is not just about "clean energy". It is not about me. It is about what we can do collectively as a group to change our environment......to share thoughts about a single topic.......that is if we want a change.....and it might only stay in the idealistic sense......and then again it might inspire someone to do something.....before the thread dies its natural death.

So peace to you dude and look forward in perhaps particpating in your thread :)

Dude, i asked 4 questions, the 1st question was this: Can anyone, esp those advocating clean energies to save the earth, enlighten me about the motivation for the shift to clean energy?, i.e. asking about clean energy in general. The 3rd question: And, if possible, the costs of all these?, i.e. the cost of a space power station and/or generic forms of clean energy.

FYI: Someone sent me the video link and I was sharing it with you all about what potentially could happen with regards to "clean energy". I thought it was an interesting concept nothing more.

You may be surprised, but this is really what some scientists want to work on. Wireless transmission of energy.

If you want to know what I, me, myself thinks about clean energy - then you would have looked on my website. I have already written a number of articles there.

I'll be extremely interested in your views. Link please?

Actually, the question i asked was more like "What do you think are the costs and consequences of moving to clean energy?"

I'm interested in climate change, but not interested enough to start a whole new thread on this issue. In your opinion, after i asked those questions, did anyone ever give a satisfactory answer?

In any case, the responses i sometimes get when i ask the reason for clean energy are quite amusing. Would you like to hear them?
