Yo! That is some cool handiwork there. Thanks for sharing!

Your next project: Guide me on how to open the 18-55 EF-s kit lens!! Oh and do tell us where to get those tools ya? Thanks!

i'd be intersted to see the results of the fungus - cleaning. doesn't it eat into the glass and not just remain on the surface ? some pics would be great.

there was this youtube vid i saw before of someone disassembling a canon 24-105 f/4L and at the last 5 seconds of the vid, the fella made the lens into a pencil holder. hahaha

i think a fellow CSer posted the link somewhere in the canon thread before. its hilarious!

hi, is the AF motor built into Canon lens? Something like USM, just that its a normal motor? Thanks.

It depends on how severe the effect of fungus. It could leave a permanent damage or no visible marks at all. In this case, it's very minimal that you need special technique to see the marks. Checking the lens in assembled condition wouldn't show the marks.

Yes, it has built-in motor. There's no need to disassemble that motor during cleaning.

Still no luck on kit lens, nobody is sending for cleaning. :(

The tools shown here came from Japan. It's around S$100 but I heard there is a cheaper version from Taiwan
There are some guys who use cheap vernier caliper as a substitute.
There are also a lot of DIY tools that are as good as the real thing.

Thanks for sharing Fatigue!

Wait till the guys see the entire procedure of the person who opened and repaird the IS on his 70-200L 2.8 IS! Remember that link I sent you? Unfortunately, it's no longer up. That person's next project was a 600mm L IS!

OK. I has a focusing problem with my 50mm 1.4 (sticking) and followed Fatigue's lead.... fixed the focus jamming and now I have a different issue. The Apature is locked will not move. I can see the blades. Wven when i take the lens off the body.
It is now hunting to focus.
OK..
1. Is there something I can do to rest it?
2. Have I killed my Lens?
3. Fatigue... do you know anyone that can help me repait it?

Thanks though.. really enjoyed pulling the little sucker appart. ;-)

1. Check the FFC (flat flexible cables)
Check how the FFC were inserted to the connector (fully inserted/correct direction)

You might need to dismantle the aperture mechanism again and do a visual check.
There's a small motor that controls the movement of the blades so don't force the lever to move the blades.

2. It can still be fixed

3. Send an SMS to 98151974 ask David if he can help. He is a bit busy so you will have to wait for a few days. :bsmilie:

Yes.. I agree.. Great work...
Just finished pulling my 50mm 1.4 apart and managed to fix a focus issue but caused something else ;-)

I will be in Singapore this weekend looking for a 50mm 1.4 now that I have cooked my other one.
Anyone suggest where I should go to get the best deals?

All help would be fantastic as there is not a 50mm in this town.

Thanks

Remove the FPC connected to the PCB
DSCN84020036.JPG

Remove the screw holding the PCB, then remove the PCB (handle carefully to avoid ESD)
DSCN84010035.JPG

How do I remove the fpc? I assume those are the cables shown? I am afraid to just jerk them loose as I dont know if there is a way to release them. Ive done everything else you have given instructions for all the way down to

Back to topic:

Remove the 3 screws (around the front barrel) holding the white spacers
DSCN83840018.JPG

Now you can remove the inner part
DSCN83800014.JPG

DSCN83810015.JPG

I cant seperate the inner part because another cable is connecting it to the other half.

Please help? I sunk my lens into the lake today and this is my only hope of saving it. Canon wont touch it

If there's fungus on the rear part. You need to remove the ring at the back
The ring can be removed using a thin rubber or a spanner like this

Bro Fatigue, where to buy this spanner? I cant find it and hardware show dunno what I'm talking about.

You need a pointed wooden tweezers to push the connector lock(white plastic part) . push it away from the connector body (the brown plastic part) .

You can use a toothpick as a substitute for the wooden tweezers.
