i wonder if this is the norm in service standard in singapore nowadays. i have the intention of buying canon speedlite 430ex II and EF 50mm f/1.8 II. hence i called a few reputable shops listed in CS for quotation, they include MS, TK, CP and JO 3:16.

after getting quotation and confirmation that there are stock from them, i decided to buy my stuffs at TK as their price on 'paper' were the best. i didnt ask for the name of the guy that quote me the price thou. i braved the rain and made my way to shaw tower, got the exact cash ready!

guess what when i step in and approached the sales 'uncle'? i asked about the items i wanted, and ask how much they were. i was told the flash was $quote+10 and lens was out of stock. what the s**t! i had an confirmation that there was stock hence i decided to go there, yet i reach le they tell me no stock? what kind of business integrity is this? i was deeply appalled.

after leaving the shop, i came to realise why they told me no stock. canon singapore is most prob going to increase price on their lenses? perhaps TK decided to hold back stock so they can sell it when price is higher?

this was the 2nd time i had bad enounter with TK. the 1st time was when i bought a batt for my cam there. prior to that, i bought a dry cabi there and i quoted prices of a lens and the batt. i thought the prices they gave was one of the best already so i was quite impressed. i was told $85 for it.

about a week later, i went back to the shop, with intention to buy it already. another sales personnel attended to me and i ask for the price of the batt again. this time he told me it was $95. i told him i was quoted last week by the other guy at $85. he said 'impossible!' with a look at me as if i am a retard or i am a cheapskate asking for cheap stuff. i pointed to him the guy that attended to me a week ago, he came and insisted that i heard wrongly. which service personnel puts blame to the customer? so in the end we settle for $90.

i thought it was an one off incident hence i didnt pay much attention to it and decided to buy my stuff at TK for the 2nd time, who knows this happens to me again? i vowed never to return to there again!

the trick to this is always to get the staff's name when u get a good price.

u must also confirm reservation for your items with the staff before u go down...they are a business, they need you to commit by a certain time. they can't hold the item for you indefinitely especially when u dun have a relationship with them yet.

also coming in one week later may also see an increase in price too, i usually double-check and reserve the item before i go down

by the way, the usual disclaimer: i dun work for TK....and no, i have not bought anything from TK. but generally these guidelines work for all shops...i know coz i bought from a couple of shops like ms color and CP already

good luck with your next experience

I think there is simply no perfect shop around. Even the reputed ones tend to attract bad comments and feedback once in awhile.

These are just small shops running business... they dont really have elaborate code of conduct to follow, like the larger companies. Most of the time, they wont bother whether the customer returns or not. Lousy way to do business I must say but that's the way it is.

true...but if u build relationships, u will be amazed at what u can achieve with good relationships.

just curious. how long was the time difference from when u got the quote n u going down to TK?

yup, so i have decided to buy my future stuffs at CP-P or JO3:16. Kevin of CP and Samuel of JO3:16 gave me a great experience while buying things from them. i feel valued as their customer. this certainly makes me want to go back there again.

Sad to hear about your encounter but hopefully is just some bad miscommunication.

I don't work for TK but I usually get most of my gear from TK as Richard/James provide really good advice.

I suggest that you look for Richard or James there.

For me if I call TK I will look for them directly to ask for quote and stock availability.
If you want to reserve the items, roughly let them know what time you are going down and give them your name and contact no.

=)

Some shops do not have firm pricing on the items they sell and they leave it to their sales person to sell at the highest price they can convince a customer to pay, and the sales person is motivated by the commission he gets for the sales he makes. That is a perfectly legal business model as far as I know.

Since you have got a prior quote that you were agreeable with, why didn't you state that up front when you went to the shop, but instead chose to ask for the price again? So that if the person quoted a lower price you will jump on that instead of telling him you were quoted a higher price earlier?

So it is fair game. You want the lowest price and the sales person wants to sell you at the highest possible price.

If you are the sales person and quote a price to a customer face to face, and the customer upon hearing that claimed that he has got a prior quote that is lower but could not tell you who that quote came from, what would you do? Defend your position right? Wouldn't you also feel a little offended that the customer witheld that information in the hope that you might quote a lower price?

Besides not patronising that store in future, what else have you learned from this? If you understand how the shop pays their sales person and you undderstand that we all want to make a decent living, would you then still push all the blame to the shop?

works both ways hor, works both ways.

why did you not say that you were headed down? i have had nothing but good service from tk. to be honest, quibbling over $10 is something i do not bother to do, especially if i have had past dealings with the shop. if you want to get cheapest price, buy second hand lor.

when i got my k20d from them, it was a pleasant affair.

not to mention, got dbs atm right smack outside the shop.. :bsmilie:

errr... people read the post properly lah... it is NOT about $10.... tk says have stock, then later no stock. he want to buy also cannot.

TS wanted to buy 2 items, one got stock but quoted +$10 and the other no stock.

Back to topic... is there a perfect shop? I guess not.. I have always bought from TK, AP SLS and CP Peninsula. Everytime asking for the same sales person in that shop and over time have established trusting relationships with the sales person.

Nowadays, I don't bargain anymore because I know the price I get is the best they can offer.

Lesson from this is to always ask for the name of the sales person that quoted you and also your name and tell him/her you are coming (time). Sometimes you'll never know that the items maybe sold off the shelf within minutes depending if it was a hot item... and the shop may think that they sold it the caller (you).

Hope you got your items you needed.

Well...first issue (recent one) does appear to be more about stock availbility and not so much about the $10 delta in quote....second issue (batt) is definitely about delta in quote.

Still no change in my comments.

In fact I want to add that for the second issue the quote was given for a lens and a battery. When the TS went back later, he only wanted to buy the battery. Isn't it reasonable that the sales person might give a better price initially thinking that TS is looking at buying both items?

TS, agree with you 100% here. CP (Kelvin) or J316 are my top 2 choices now!

as i said, it's not about the $10. in the end i bought the stuff at 10 above the price quoted by TK. it's about the service i received, i am generally unhappy about their business integrity. i thought a shop like TK would have better integrity. perhaps my image as a student make that person thinks that i am unable to afford it and i just there to quote the price?
