wheres the cheapest place to get a uv filter and a screen protector in sim lim sq? thinking of going down to get the items later but dun have much time to scout for the cheapest store. :(

Unless it's Orient Photo or Alan Photo, I wouldn't go anywhere near any other shop in SLS. Some shops are run by sharks. They'll bluff you into the water and then gobble you up. ;p

Second that. Hands off from any other shop than Orient Photo. But also there you must know at least what you want and also roughly what is the market rate for that.
Apart from that you better check the list of reputable shops. You might find a shop closer to your place.

i'll be heading down to town later so might as well drop by sim lim square since its nearby. or somewhere near dhoby ghaut also can! :)

thinking of getting a hoya uv filter and a screen protector for my 450d.

any idea what's the market price? seems like alot of ppl favour orient photo. which level is the shop located? maybe i'll get my stuff there?

Straits Times just published that there are more complaints on Sim Lim Square shops recently. Your better choice is go to nearby Penisular area or Funan, the camera shops there are more honest (Cathay or John3.16).

I suggest that you get a dry cab. You will have more peace of mind storing your 1.2+K camera equipment there. Beware of fungus

Price List - Filters - prices are quite stable, no big changes.
Orient Photo is at level 6. Don't be puzzled if nobody jumps at you once upon entering the shop. Take your time to have a look around and grab the guys once you want to know something.

if i want to get the hoya range of uv filters, which 1 is a better buy? =X

58mm HMC UV - ($25 - TCW)
58mm Pro1 Digital Clear Protector - $27 (MS)
58mm UV - $12 (MSC)

challenger in funan got the biggest range of digi - cab on display - > 5-7 sizes with price tag affixed. iirc, the 60L is $249, cant remember the $ for the other sizes. the cost increase by abt $30 for the next bigger size.

have anyone tried to call orient photo? have been trying to call them over the past few days but no one seemed to pick up the phone.

went over on Sunday and realised they are closed.

Skip the last one, no Multi-Coating. The best buy is the buy that you really need. Wasting money on unnecessary equipment is never a good buy. I have one Pro1 Digital Clear Protector that I don't use anymore. It's PITA to clean and causes flaring in backlight conditions and at night. I only use hoods now.
I'd recommend B+W filters. Costs about twice as much for 58mm. Check the Mass Sales section, Henessy has good prices. http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showthread.php?t=435563

AFAIK the guys are from China. They will enjoy a longer CNY then.

Brother Ice,
Some advice to help you save some money. Go buy the large screen protectors (ONLY $2) at the Daiso shop. Go ask the salesperson look for the handphone/pda screen protectors. Small, big, bigger, biggest size ALL ONLY $2. Similar quality as those crappy overpriced camera LCD screens.

But if you're rich, go buy the $100 LCD screens.

God bless.

hmm.. but the problem is without filters im afraid of the lens being scratched. heart pain.:bheart:

I wouldn't trust shops in SLS.
Heard too many horror stories.
To me, SLS is just a chop-ang-moh-paradise.

Be alert, be careful, otherwise no filter will help you. If you think the filter will help you then the bang will come from a different angle. Do you wear a life vest all day and night just in case one fine day at the jetty in Punggol you will fall into the water..? :)
