My first post here :)
--------------------

I picked up a Tamron 90mm Di Macro lens yesterday (I am using a Sony Alpha 350). Was pretty difficult to get one with a Sony mount.

I read about the lenses here and a few other places and then decided that Tamron 90mm was a good value for money lens.

In my quest to find this lens...I called a few shops (as it is difficult to find this lens with Sony/Minolta mount).

The prices quoted varied a lot:

TK Photo - $540
Alan - $560
Cam Workshop - $585

Went to a couple of shops in Sim Lim and enquired at a couple of shops on the 1st level. Was quoted $650 / $685....

Finally managed to get a good deal @ Sim Lim itself. Bought the lens from Pixels and Pixels (#02-81) ...the sales assistant, Benson, is a wonderful person...allowed me try out the lens properly.

Paid $520 including gst....brand new...with Warranty.

Haven't had the time to shoot too many pics as I got it only last night.....but whatever little I have used it....am happy.

Cheers

this 3 lens performance is quite consistant and their prices are around the same.

Tamron 90mm is very popular and light weight, tokina 100mm bulit is very good, some of the ppls prefer the warm colour of Sigma lenses.

You might want to bring you camera to camera shop to tryout yourself, but remember to buy want you like (Tamron/Tokina/Sigma), not what the sale person like.

viewin tokina tonite at 430 with hoya filter.1.5 yrs

Quite true...in my expedition to Sim Lim yesterday....almost every shop offered some other lens which is "supposedly better" than the Tamron 90mm. Fortunately I had read the pitfalls when going to Sim Lim....took my camera along....tried out the lens....all good till now.

is $430 to ex for 1-5 yrs old tokina 100 macro?

Congrats on your new purchase bro. This is a very good lens and I believe someone is selling one in the Buy/Sell section. Anyway, I've gotten this lens twice w/o any difficulty and using the 100mm now.

BTW, there's an outing this Sat where you can test out this lens. ;)

Thanks mate...love the lens.

Would love to join for a gtg....but am traveling on Sat and back only last week Feb. Will come for any outing thereafter.

Cheers

what about those macro lens extensions like raynox / close up filters? any comments on those?

This should be a different topic, and has also already been discussed to death.

While it may give macro-like effects, you'll never achieve the same sharpness as a dedicated macro lens.

Taken with Canon 500D close up lens.. aka close up filter..

yep agree that it's been discussed to death.. but just suggesting coz i think TS seems to be on the budget conscious side as well.. and close up adapters like the raynox can (i think) give equivalent fun for the $$ if you're not toooo concerned with super sharp pictures..

at the end of the day it's up to TS to decide coz it's his money.. and he has his own needs and stuff..
