Straits Times infringes copyright by taking Facebook picture of triathlete

The Straits Times took a picture from a national athlete's facebook account. Not very nice and definitely not legal.

In Olympics Village, condoms are distributed freely. So what? Should our athletes take them and use them?

In a competition, athletes have to maintain their professionalism, before their races. Hence the rules, since kids nowadays cant think for themselves. They are athletes, they are not overseas for a tour. Primary objective is to win their race. Or at least do their best. Getting caught in each other's room? Bad idea. It not only reflects bad on the athletes, but what if competing athletes discover it, and start spreading slanderous remarks on it? Detrimental. Very Detrimental.

Whatever they do AFTER the races, is usually taken with a closed eye. Even in the Olympics Village, the orgies start after all the races are over. Go check, if you are unconvinced, with one of our Singaporean Swimmers who went there before.

Point is, if they get banned, they deserved it. They know the rules, they broke it. As athletes, they do not have that self discipline. So their photos should not be taken from the Facebook, cos its bad. So?

I noticed your signature says RTFM .. I think you should practice that by RTFA (article). The reason shw cited for going to the room was cos she was put in a block at the games village where there was no one else there. On top of the fact that the Bali Bombers were hanged that day and there was news that things might turn violent.

Also .. the story is about how the press is sensationalizing stories and also the issue of rights infrignement. Please .. read the story first before commenting.

The law will protect them only if they give sufficient acknowledgement of the work. I didn't see the article so I can't tell if this was the case.

In all honesty they knew the rules and chose to broke it. Yes it is unfortunate the case has reached it's proportions now but all the talk of fear of bombing is not valid in my opinion. I mean I am sure there were Singapore Officials who went along. The lady could have brought up the point the moment she got there or during the point when she felt she couldn't sleep at night to them. She should not have gone and simply stayed in the room knowing full well it is a breach of rules. Even if there are no Singapore Officials, I am sure she could have brought it up to the village staff.

They are national athletes, they represent Singapore and unfortunately they have responsibilities.

It is the same theory of how when you are in the working world, and your overseas counterparts judge your company by how you behave.

In that case, it is in my opinion, not sufficient acknowledgement. Yet another point against ST (see previous thread where I discussed this issue of Credit to "Internet Photo"). ST is under the misconception that anything on the Internet is free. They really need to check with their legal department or their external counsel if their inhouse doesn't know better.

Does it means all atheletes has to become a monk and nun to stay competitive? I dun think so lah. These atheletes are super fit and energised, if we as normal people needs it regularly even though we are not as fit as them, I would think they need it more than us? Tio boh eh? heehhee.......

So you watch your behavior and don't do anything as shameful as this... to be caught in the same room. That in itself being in the same room says alot. Did they do anything or not. What they want to do in their free time out of competition is their own issue. it reminds me of a very senior member of the estab who was on official visit to a regional country. he embarassed us, thus, was banished to a distant country, where he died not too long ago.
