chinese national bus drivers

being a non chinese myself, i wonder

during my growing up years, i had to learn to speak hokkien
if not i would find it difficult to order food and drinks from the hawker center
could not talk myself out of trouble with the gangsters

most of the population in singapore are from chinese descent
and 1 or 2 generations ago they too could speak little or no english
in fact they were better at the malay language than english

so lets cut them some slack and give them time to learn
I hope the companies that hire them are giving them training

lets keep this thread clean, so that i don't need to close it

seriously, singapore is not just populated by chinese people....how come no one foresaw this?

it not no one foresee such a situation, its just a policy to keep business costs down. S'pore always plan ahead most of the time, that would require foresight. i guess its that some ideas to keep business costs down, has some negative spillover effects.

as a major public transport provider there is little alternative choice for the supply demand to work. its up to our local community to chip in to help be translator loh... :embrass:

in china, its left hand drive, how come they can just drive a bus when they come to sg? is it a OJT that they familiar themselves with the right hand drive or they need to clock certain hours in the circuit before allowed on the roads?

i don't think any of us have a problem with having chinese nationals in the service sector per se...they're decent people, most of them...it's more of the language problems it poses to non-mandarin speakers....

thinking of it this way..my grandparents are chinese nationals too..but they found a way to fit in by learning malay,english and all the other languages required for commerce here when they came.

To be frank, most modern chinese nationals who are here for employment will be keen to learn English as they work. sometimes, the circumstances prevent them from learning and to go to a good school here, it costs thousands per semester. Even those who are attending, they often tell me they are falling asleep in class as its so technical.

As to why employers cannot have the luxury to hire english speaking employees from China is because they are not educated in this language to begin with. Yes, some do know how to speak, but they probably can barely hold a conversation in English, not to mention cope with our profound language called Singlish.

Like it or not, they are here to be part of the community. We just have to learn to appreciate their presence and hopefully, it will be for the better.

How do you know they are driving the moment they arrive in Singapore? Have you ever seen those buses with "L" on the backside? Those are to let the drivers familiarize with the routes they are going to drive......

ah, but if wad u said is truth dan there must be a flaw in the selection process. if a person is not up to the task during interview, why hire? are local hires not expected to hit the ground running very quickly? :dunno:

just curious, how feasible would the idea of having an in company english tutoring course? i mean, the uncles and aunties don't speak very good english themselves, but good enough to understand and be understood.

i am fine with chinese workers. most of them are polite. one of my colleagues is a chinese national, and he is one of my closest buddies at work.

but there are freaking disgusting ones which are mostly engaged in the construction industry, which freaking turns me off. they leave their shirts unbuttoned ALL THE WAY with nothing underneath inside crowded MRT trains, sit in buses in a manner occupying the ENTIRE seat which, they will fail to shift their dumb legs away when they find someone bout to sit beside them. i sat on one of them once (his disgusting leg) and he juz glared at me, almost like wanting to eat me up. and he spent the entire trip glaring at me. f**king hell. pisses the living daylights outta me even right now.. to think about it. Even indians and bangladeshis are much more well behaved in public.

and i doubt education plays a part. i have met my fair share of doctorates with attitudes as high as their certifications to match. i just want to scream right into their faces to get out of my beloved country, and go back to where they came from.... only to the select few that are so freaking disgusting...

couple of times i see them shadowing the local bus drivers first..that's one..i'm not sure what else is involved.

All those who arrive will try their best to keep the job. they have an agency loan (usually about sgd$10k) to service and hence will work very hard to make the dough. if they got retrenched, they will have to continue paying the loan from loan sharks.
This is one reason why geylang has so many syt. If they have a choice, they wont be standing there.

As for guys, the are worse off as they cant sell their bodies.
