Hey Bros!

Need some help here. I've been spending unnecessary time downloading all the photos into hardisks even though all my gadgets are USB 2.0, even motherboard core 2 duo also usb 2.0, but everytime i plug in a USB 2,0 gadget into the PC, this irritating message keep popping out " your fast speed USB device is plugged into slow speed USB port. Unplug the device and plug it into a fast speed hub". Crap. I've searched the internet, called the shops but nobody has a fix for it. I've tried new fast speed cables, checked device manager (confirmed there is USB 2.0 port) but everytime plug in, the damn message keep appearing. I even bought a PCI USB 2.0 card and fix it into the damn pc and still all those ports are not recognised as 2.0 but still working as usb 1.1. tmd...;:)faint:

Some forums mention it could be a fault with MICROSOFT WINDOWS SP3, bcos those wif same problem on SP2 has fixes that solve the problem. Some shop owners also blame MICROSOFT's crappy windows SP3. EXTREMELY FRUSTRATED HAVING PAYING the SH*T A*SE microsoft so much money and getting CRAP for their products. Makes me want to support the kind dealers who offer the same software for 100 time cheaper (wif one on one exchange warranty somemore)...

Any IT wizard bros here kind enuff to share how to get the d*mn PC to recognise my USB2.0 ports??? Downloading fotos using USB 2.0 is about 40 times faster than the conventional USB 1.1....

PLS help!! Many thanks!

Your USB 2.0 setup sounds okay to me.

Are you using high speed USB 2.0 cables to connect your equipment?

There is a difference between USB 1.1 (slowspeed) and USB 2.0 (highspeed) cables.

Have you gone into CMOS BIOS at boot up to check your USB configure? If you really have no legacy USB 1.0 devices. Best to disable legacy support for USB 1.0. It might even have a mode that say enable USB 2.0 if this is switched off this could explain the message you get in XP. Also select "Ensure High Speed". Give it a try to see if this helps.

If your motherboard setting is set to support legacy USB 1.0 then you can in some boards select which USB socket support USB 1.0 or 2.0.

USB has the following speeds
- USB2.0, aka High speed USB , 480Mbits / sec .I presume thisis the fast speed USB you referred to.
- USB1.1, aka full speed USB, 12Mbits / sec
and there is a low-speed USB, 1.5Mbits /sec.

The fine print is that a host/hub/device can still be called USB2.0 compliant if it supports only 12Mbps/1.5Mbps. THis is because you can still plug this item into a USB2.0 system data comm can be done.

If your hub happens to be like this, and you connect it between your USB2.0 highspeed HDD and your latest and greatest USB2.0 highspeed PC, too bad. The hub is the bottleneck of the whole setup and limits the throughput between ur PC and ur HDD.

It will be useful if you can provide more info on what are the USB hub/devices you have connected up to your pC.

Of course the other possibilities are driver problem but I assume you have a reasonably new version of oS with the right driver support to start with.

the cables are the same.

the only variants of the USB cables available today are due for the 'traditional' and the mini USB connectors, wich the latter was introduced for portable devices.

Hey Lord, sammy, Connor, Many thanks for sharing. I'm still very confused. My portable hard disk, camera, usb 2.0 extension hub (4 additional hubs), even a new PCI usb 2.0 card are all usb 2.0 standard. Even my motherboard is a core 2 duo, which is considered to be usb 2.0 compliant. problem is every darn usb2.0 gadget that i fix into every usb port (i tried each and every usb port i can find on the pc) still show me a message that i've fixed it to a slow speed usb port, when i click on that message (which tells me to disconnect the usb port and affix it to a usb port in bold which supposedly is a usb 2.0 port, I see the following chart which shows Intel 82801G(ICH7 family)USB2 enhanced controller27CC, and under its sub category: USB Root Hub (8 Ports) in bold but under this subcategory, 8 Unused Port which are not in bold (which I assume all of them are not usb2.0 even though the root directory shows usb2 enhanced controller (which is supposed to be usb2.0!).

The PCI usb2.0 card which i fixed on the mother board same story: Root directory: VIA USB Enhanced Host controller, under which it says USB Root Hub (4 ports), but under this, 4 unused ports, again not in bold.

I went to bios and ensured that high speed USB is enabled, but couldnt find any USB1.1 to disable. I did find a 'legacy' thingy (but without the 1.1 showing) and disabled that, rebooted and tried to plug in some usb2.0 gadgets and the same pissing message came out again showing I have plugged a USB2.0 gadget on a non USB2.0 jack. tmd... frustrasi...

Is it only me, or is it the motherboard (which some forumers mentioned), or is it Windows SP3 (also mentioned in forums)?

Any other bros got this pissing USB2.0 plug in slow hole problem??

Pls do share any possible solutions, i'll try em and revert to yall. Many thanks in advance!

What motheboard is that? Self built PC? SP3 does nothing to aid USB compliance.

I beg to differ but there is a price difference between 1.1 and 2.0 USB cables.

However, some USB experts have stated that a high quality 1.1 cable can support 2.0 speeds.

BTW: I'm running XP SP3 too and do not have this USB 2.0 problem.

My USB port speed issue was with BIOS setting. Check your BIOS setting to ensure USB 2.0 is enabled for your USB ports. The 2 Dell laptops (Win XP, D600 and now D620) I used have the ports set to USB 1.x for power consumption considerations. Users have to go into Dell's BIOS settings to set it for USB 2.0 to take advantage of higher speed.

My macbook has 2 different speed USB ports. One nearer the rear is USB 1.x, the other nearer the... er.. it's just next to the other USB, lets just say nearer the touchpad is USB 2.0. However I did not bother to up the speed on the USB 1.x

Just sharing. Good Luck!

Below from USB2.0 spec chapeter 6.6.1, I see hi/full speed cables are the same but low speed is different. So in a way I agree with you 1.1 cable cannot support high speed if it was designed only for low-speed spec, but otherwise I see no issue. Like you said, a crappy cable designed for hi-speed may also have issues (e.g. poor eye pattern which lead to higher bit error rate on the receiving end if the receiving device's dsp is not strong enough)

:

High-/full-speed cable consists of one 28 to 20 AWG non-twisted power pair and one 28 AWG twisted data
pair with an aluminum metallized polyester inner shield, 28 AWG stranded tinned copper drain wire,
> 65% tinned copper wire interwoven (braided) outer shield, and PVC outer jacket.

is recommended) with an aluminum metallized polyester inner shield, 28 AWG stranded tinned copper
drain wire and PVC outer jacket. A > 65% tinned copper wire interwoven (braided) outer shield is

Hi gunawan,

One possibility is that you have too many high power devices connected to your hub which then connects to the PC, and all the items are drawing power from the hub . USB2.0 can only power up to 500mA to the hub. so it means all devices/hub connected to this first hub can only consume up to 500mA.. limited really.

Anyway, debug session starts. Keep system simple and do a divide and conquer strategy .
1) Get another PC (borrow a reasonably new notebook from a friend).
2) For each USB2.0 device/hub you got, plug it into your own PC and then your friend's. See what is the message.

If your PC always has problem with ALL its USB ports detecting the highspeed device... then maybe you want to check the SP or otherwise the hardware.

Note, as mentioned earlier, 2.0 HDD , unless self powered (i.e. own power supply or battery operated) is a high power device which means you need two USB ports to power it.
Your camera is not a problem because it has a battery inside to operate the USB anyway.

Hey bros, thank u all for sharing. I've tried all the methods suggested, bios setup, high speed cables, got another notebook, tried all the usb ports, it works on the other notebook but not on my crappy core 2 duo desktop.

btw, bro sammy may have a point. If Lord Soth also uses SP3 and no problem, then I figured could be the darn motherboard: mine's a gigabyte 945GCM- S2L core 2 duo FSB1333, supports 8 USB 2.0 ports but the error keeps coming out and all devices are recognised as 1.1.... :complain::complain::faint::mad2::mad2:

anyone uses the same motherboard facing the same issue?

SP3 does solve some USB problems but from what I saw, very specific problems. I am still not using SP3 on on 2 other PCs and I never have a problem with the USB.

Have you flash your motherboard with any new bios?

i have this problem but after trying afew method i still cant solve it
so i got myself a firewire card reader .. :embrass:

I've tried every method available suggested by CS bros and internet remedies, including flashing and updating the BIOS, but still cannot recognise my USB 2.0...:mad2:

Looks like I gotta join u to get a firewire or buy another darn PC...:mad2::mad2::hung:

Thanks everyone for sharing.

dun need so drastic la. buying a new pc when yours is already a core 2 duo..

it might be a software issue instead of hardware. try updating all your drivers, or reinstalling all your drivers.

i get this problem sometimes when i boot up in the past. when i re-installed all my drivers, it went away, for a while. then it came back.

then i reformatted my PC for a different reason, and it has not come back since.. its been.. 4 months??

Hi Luntut,
I not sarcastic da. I frustrated...
btw, I tried to uninstall my drivers, but there is no option to uninstall leh (i placed my gigabyte CD in and tried to re-install, but no options to re-install), so can advise how do I uninstall the drivers?
Or do u mean I have to re-install windows XP?

Try boot your system to safe mode and do the following
(assuming your mouse is not USB!)

1. Go to safe mode
2. Right Click MY COMPUTER select MANAGE
3. Click Device Manager and you should see your devices connected
4. Right Click the devices you want to uninstall and select UNINSTALL
5. Finish whatever you want and reboot system
6. WinXP boots in and allow it to re-detect all drivers required.

See whether doing these would help

haha bro! i mentioned DRASTIC! not SARCASTIC! haha!

chill bro! its just a small thing.. try out what bro woojacky mentioned. or else you can go to device manager, den select the USB ports and update drivers. might work..

sometimes, when all else fails and/or i am too lazy to think (which happens v often) i just reformat my pc. its quite a good thing actually, then everything feels like new again.. not so laggy, responses so much faster.. yada yada the list goes on..

keep us informed about the outcome!

hehe if you are intending to get a new system,
TRY MAC
