Baby Delivery C Section Can Bring DSLR?

Hi folks,

My baby delivering via C section at Gleneagles hospital soon. Doc says can bring in small camera. Has any fathers brought in a DSLR in this case?

Thanks for any advise.

Intended to shoot w Canon 450D + 50mm 1.8 @ ISO 400-800

Don't think you're allowed to bring any camera into OT. Please check with the Doctors to find out hospital policy.

Hi, I think from what I found out is you can take photo before and after ops and not during. You will be outside waiting during the 'opening ceremony' part. : )

I believe that most hospitals and most doctors would not allow the photo taking or even video taking, when a procedure is being performed. Liability issues......

Anyway, check with the doctor.

I work in hospitals' OT, though not in delivery nor Geneagles. Cams are generally not allowed in for patient's confidentiality. Since this is ur wife, if both she and doc say u can bring the cam in, there's probably no probs. Bear in mind the OT will be brightly lit up for the doc to see clearly, so u dun have to be concerned abt low light. Instead u should be concerned with zoom, as you shouldn't disturb the doc from working, and should be as invisible as possible. Some docs may scrub you up and let u help with some minor parts like cutting the cord, if so, ur hands have to be sterile and thus won't be able to hold a camera at all.

In short, discuss with the doc and make sure both of you understand what's going to happen inside. This is the best way for you to prepare the shoot, and the doc won't be caught by surprise too. Since ur paying top dollars for GlenE, I'm sure he's obliged to meet your needs, within reason of course.

I wasn't even allowed to go in during the op @ TMC. So stayed outside and snapped only when they brought the baby out.

For TMC c-op can allow after "delivery" but not the portion of your wife open tummy and on her and baby is ok. They also allow when they put your baby in warmer in OT.

C-section = Mostly cannot / Depends on Doc

In any case, no flash. use available light.

And don't faint on the floor as blood is everywhere

my baby also C section the doctor must approve you first and he will infor what type of camera you can bring , as for me it allow me to bring only compact camera to shot baby notting near to your wife where the doctor is operating

Thanks for all the responses. I'll bring the cam to the clinic tomorrow for doc to see. Last visit before the C section on Monday. If cannot DSLR, then no choice use my trusty Powershot S80 which is still going strong after all these years. It still takes beautiful shots.

I'm not really interested in the bloody end of the proceedings, more the upper half.

Will let your all know how it goes. Main thing still is health baby and mum. Pics a very close 2nd. Haha. Welcome anymore advise if any.

Hey, congratulations on being a parent!!

If you can stomach the bloodiness of the whole affair, remember to shoot the placenta and the umbilical cord. I did it for educational purposes - I showed to my child for life education purposes when they grow up. Even my wife was surprised to see the pic thereafter.

Don't be too concern about shooting things in the most beautiful way or composition etc. Go with the flow and enjoy the experience, yah?

Meter a few shots first and if you're not moving about... you can fix the settings in M mode and just shoot.

last year when my wife c-sec at mt. a, cant bring in PNS camera even... all allow was to let me sit by her side.. a cloth cover her tummy from my view... u got to check with the nurse and not the doc, the doc cant talk to you, a nurse brought me in... in medical suit.. no pockets one... no where to hide cam.. hee...

When my baby was delivered back then, it was through normal delivery. However I'd think that the doctor might not allow DSLR due to the mirror flipping sound. PnS are generally silent so should be Ok. Imagine you shoot at 8fps and they mistaken it for a machine gun!

But like what the other advised, check and clear with the doctor/hospital that you can use your DSLR in the OT.

Took Sony Handycam with me, and the nurse took over filming while I was cutting the umbilical cord, then gave it back to me after.

As long as you are not setting up umbrellas in the operating theatre or blinding the surgeon with nukes...:nono:

Ask first to prevent disappointment.
