There is white water rafting, but it is not advisable to do it at this time of the year (rainy season) due to flash floods. There are plenty of drowning records in the past around this time of the year.

If you are still keen, the indonesian word for that is "arung jeram".

Gonna be there in March next year. If I am not mistaken, that should be summer (same as in the Philippines). :)

Now I do not know as the weather is upside down due to global warming.
If it is after chin ming then should be ok, if before then better not.
Chin Ming is the time where chinese visit the grave of their ancestor, normally it rains heavily during that time (so they dont have to carry too much water - easy to clean the graveyard). Not that got ghost or something but it is just the weather.

There's so much info on Bali on the internet. It's a pretty safe place to go and in fact i'm goin there next wk! Lovely place to take pictures. A hike on Mount Batur is def worth experiencing juz to enjoy the sunrise. Its simply breathtaking!

Kuta has lovely sunsets and you won't get sick of it. Explore the culture and the different dances. Food there is cheap esp if you wanna splurge a little and try their fancy restaurants(My pick is ESC foodstation!).http://www.escbali.com/

5 days 4 nights is not enough 4 me seriously! I always go there in a span of 2 wks each time! So many cheap accomodation there so you don't have to worry abt it. Here is a website that may cater to ur needs.http://www.baliblog.com/

Have fun planning your trip!

Lovely shot. I've seen other breath taking pictures taken from Mt. Batur. Am actually considering that activity. Just need to read up how the climb is gonna be. :D My family and I have gone up to Taal Volcano in the Philippines before and it was quite a climb for us already.

Will check out the links you provided. Thanks!

Thought I should give an update for the benefit of others... :)

1 & 2. We booked a Superior Room at Bali Rani Hotel in Kuta through AsiaTravel. Got it for US$60 per night inclusive of breakfast. We picked this up for its convenient location, and the reviews I've read have mostly been positive.

3. Checked with the Hotel's front office regarding airport transfer (return) and was quoted US$6 nett per person. US$18 for the 3 of us I suppose should be fine.

5. I've so far shortlisted the following activities:

* White water rafting
* Bali Hai Reef Cruise.

Bali Hai Reef Cruise.....

Wow.... that is a good place to see marine life without getting wet. Near the island of Nusa Penida. I was there for Scuba Diving in 2007. But be warn.... the water is cold there.... not the normal 29-30 deg water in S'pore.... but 24-26 deg. 1st time I've ever wear a 4mm wetsuit was there

Hi Pinoy.

I have gone river rafting in Bali 3 times already. Here's my input:

1. Cost of rafting trip will be from US$45 to US$65 per head. If you have a tour guide with you he can get discounted rates for you. The cost includes transport to/from your hotel and also lunch after your rafting trip. Popular rafting companies are Sobek and Ayung Rafting Tours. If I am not mistaken there are at least 5 rafting companies in Bali.

2. I find the rafting quite safe but then I went during the dry season where the rapids are not that strong. Now is the wet season so risk of capsizing is higher but you will have flotation vests and safety helmet on. The good companies will give you a safety talk on how to use the paddle and what to do if you fall off the raft.

3. Bring along a compact digicam or small dslr. The rafting company will provide a large waterproof bag to store your camera, wallet etc. The bag is tied to the raft so there's no chance of it floating away if your raft tips over. There will be one or two breaks during your journey down the Ayung river. During the breaks you can take pictures of your family, the waterfall etc. You can also swim in the refreshing river. Wear t-shirts and water sandals. Wife should have a swimsuit under her clothes.

4. During the journey downriver you will not have the opportunity to take pictures without risking your camera. Anyway, you and the others have to paddle while the river guide steer the raft.

5. Rafting is expensive but a fun and memorable trip. Enjoy!

Tumbleweed >> Many thanks for the info. I've actually searched around and remember running into some peeps suggesting Sobek and Ayung. Guess will just have to pick between these 2.

BTW, if I may ask, which river did you go to? And what's a better time to take the rafting activity.. morning or afternoon? :)

Leave your expensive camera behind. Maybe one of those Olympus shock/water resistant might be useful.
Lots of activities to do in Bali, the hotel front desks would have the brochures/info. No need to worry to plan everyday/everything. Most important, flights/hotel accommodation and airport transfers. Then decide when you reach there, dont stress yourself now too much. Enjoy the vacation!
Nusa Penida waters may not be that cold this time of the year, so you should be fine snorkelling there.
Try Warung Made at Kuta Square and Ibu Oka Babi Guling at Ubud.

There are, I think, two rivers where rafting is conducted. Ayung river is the main one and I forgot the name of the other. Sobek and Ayung River Rafting will have their rafting in the Ayung river. It is the main and most famous river in Bali. The approx 2 hour rafting journey will bring you through Balinese forests, villages and pass by expensive hotel resorts.

The Ayung river is wide and relatively safe in my opinion. There were a few areas where the water flows rapidly and occasions where your raft will go downslope for that adrenaline rush.

My second rafting trip was along a narrow river where both sides of the river were high walls with no river banks. I found that trip to be the most exciting because the water was flowing faster and more slopes to negotiate. I saw few people fell off their rafts during that trip. With the current wet season, this river would be even scarier!

My suggestion is to take the morning trip if you don't mind waking up early. The forest in the valley is refreshing in the morning and light is good for photography.

Since you are staying in Kuta, the trip to the mountains will take longer compared to staying in Ubud. In other words the rafting company will pick you up from your hotel at about 7.00am or 7.30am. If you want your beauty sleep, than pick the afternoon trip. But since this is the low season, the rafting company may only have one session instead of two so you may not have much of a choice. You should be back to your hotel by 2pm ready for another round of shopping in Kuta.

Things to bring: Camera, some money in a waterproof zip lock bag (no need wallet) to buy soft drinks or beer. The river guide can be your photographer when you want a family picture.

Things to wear: T-shirt, shorts and water sandals. Don't wear flip-flops (or cap) unless you are willing to lose it if you fall over. Towels from the hotel. For the wife, ask her to wear a swimsuit under her t-shirt and shorts.

Good Luck!

Tumbleweed >> Wow.. thanks for the additional info! You've basically given me an idea of what to expect on our first white water rafting activity.

I think I'll leave my DSLR setup in the hotel and just bring along my PnS -- Panasonic Lumix TZ15 -- on board. Better be safe than be sorry.

sorry to borrow this thread, but it seems like the most appropriate to my question. I thought no point to start a new thread.

Am planning to go to Bali in mid April, the week after the Easter weekend.
Will be there for 4 days, and my main priorities will be:
-food
-spa/relaxation
-photography

have earmarked Tanah Lot, Lake Bratan, Danau Batur, Ubud, Mengwi as nice locations for photographs.

My questions is:
Area there tours catering to photo enthusiasts?

Will skip the rafting/canoeing activities, which seem to be very popular.

If no such tours exist, I will consider self-drive of rental car.
How are the roads like? Something like Malaysia 'B' roads?

Roads are not easy to navigate, it is better to hire a driver, who knows the place, and allows you to concentrate on taking pics, and cheaper than a GPS too :)

Thanks for the prompt reply!
The problem is that i'm pretty sensitive to others' driving styles. Usually I get motion-sickness unless I'm the one driving.
This can take up to an hour to subside after getting out of the vehicle.
A group of my friends recently rented an MPV for a self-drive trip around Bali. That's why I think it's do-able, with the right map.
I heard that driving after sunset is not advisable, so will have to take that into consideration.

Or perhaps there is some overnight tour that includes the places I mentioned? That might be ok too.

Posting from bali now :) Driving is really not for the faint hearted. I also suffer from motion sickness, but still the drivers driving here should be better than urs in this case as they are use to the road conditions. Just get them to drive slower. And a GPS is virtually useless here except for the tourist spots. For photography i doubt you will go to the tourists spots all the time. Staying in my friends homestay now. There are no specific tour for photographers i think, but from my past visits, I had hired a guide who is familiar more with the non tourist place as he brings ppl like foreign writers, crews around. Maybe these are the ppl u should find.

ok thanks for the pointers! If I go on a 2D1N road trip before returning to Kuta/Denpasar area, with a car and driver, do i have to settle the accomodation for the driver as well?
I plan to stay the first night and last night in Kuta/Denpasar area, with a 2D1N trip to the Kintamani/Lake Batur area in between. So what are your suggestions?

It's up to you if you want to get the driver his own room..

But based on what I've read, some inns/hotels have some kind of sleeping quarters for drivers. There are also some drivers who prefer/want to spend the night in the car instead.
