Recycable Sunset

1. in what area is critique to be sought?
composition, first impression, color effect, photo classification (can this be consider abstract?)

2. what one hopes to achieve with the piece of work?
to use ordinary things that we come across in our daily life to represent something else and provoke thoughts and become a topic for discussion (even if it's just for a few minutes)

3. under what circumstance is the picture taken? (physical conditions/emotions)
curiosity, tired after work, to relax the mind by thinking of something different

4. what the critique seeker personally thinks of the picture
using only magazines, i arranged the stacks to form layers of corners so that it looks like a sun, which in this case is setting, thus creating the reddish/brownish hue in the background which also happens to be a page from another magazine.

I could not, in the least, see "sunset" in this. The strong contrast to the images inside the yellow borders on the magazines break any illusion of a "sun".

It's a good idea, but I do not believe the execution was quite right. Using magazine covers that blend in better with the yellow (such as white, cream, etc) would have manitained the illusion better, as would more magazines. As it is, I see 3 "sun rays", which makes me think more of the durian (esplanade) than sunset.

well pointed, need to pay more attention to the small details (color blending).

My first thought is of National Geographic while looking at your image. When you're trying to create a new association, it's easier to not use objects that already have a strong bond with the viewer. So your image might be a success with anyone who doesn't or hasn't read National Geographic but people who have will tend to rely on their own previously made associations first. Either overlap the magazine covers so the yellow border is not as obvious (you can maybe show the top magazine partially, but leave the overlapped ones covered) or use something else entirely, eg yellow post-it pads etc etc.

you're right, the natgeo magazines really aren't the best ones to use for this shot, too easily distinguishable by their yellow border :-D unfortunately, those are the only magazines i've to work with cause my plan was to only use old magazines. guess i've to find some other ways to put the magazines into good use.

no wonder something kept bugging me about that word, but i was too lazy to google the correct spelling.

space restriction only have my cubicle to work on, unless i run into the meeting room and use the entire floor space there for my 'creativity' hahhaha...

yup, 'creativity' should not be restricted by space or any other factors...

just a personal opinion here..
like the use of DoF...
but because youve taken the picture so that the first magazine is out of focus, and only the 3 or 4th magazine is in focus, for some reason it draws me away from the magazines and to the completely out of focus background (to the right of the magazines..)
maybe its just me...

maybe try making the first magazine in focus?

If you had wanted an abstract sunset shot, then the "sun" would be disappearing into the horizon; ie you should have rotated the photo to the left 90 deg.
